Hi all, I've got an unexpected week off due to the current climate and i thought i'd have a day out with the camera. Now i live a few miles from Newstead Abbey so i thought that'd be nice.

I went and they are charging you to get in. It was always free untill Nottingham City Council took it on. So i got on the t'internet to look for somewhere else and find that Wollaton Hall in Nottingham is free but is ALSO owned by Nottm city council. How does that work then.

My thoughts are that Newstead is more touristy as it has the Byron connection. Make them both free or charge for both!

Have you never looked closely at various council's signage?

NOTTINGHAM CITY COUNCIL
Sorry, but there's a profit to be had.

you tried rufford? oh. they charge for car parking too.

Isn't that only at weekends and school holidays that they charge there?
I know it used to be, I used to do voluntary work there when I was a local.
I haven't been to Newstead for years because of how much it cost to get in (I've heard talk of a footpath you can use that takes you into the park and you don't have to pay, but I've never found out where that is, and obviously, that means walking further :) )

Papplewick is only open at weekends. Didnt think about Rufford Abbey. I might go up there as it has certain centimental link as thats where me and the t'wife to be first met...

And you're going to risk another visit........sheesh!!
If you go past the main entrance and turn down to the ford, there is another carpark there and they no longer charge on that one due to the garden centre.

i love these posts from people moaning about paying to get in places

will the same people be moaning when these places shut due to lack of funds !!!!

, I'm a regular visitor to Newstead abbey and rufford , both beautiful well kept places and well worth supporting

If you read the OP again you'll see that Dave wasn't whinging about paying to get in, but questioning why one was free and one charges admission.

Personally, I don't think you should have to pay for anywhere like that. We all pay tax/council tax etc, so that should go towards funding these places. Councils aren't private businesses, and shouldn't be run as such.

point taken re first post , sorry , but my post wasn't aimed solely at the OP

it does annoy me to read about people using footpaths to avoid paying admission charges though ,

there isn't enough places like these and we should support them more

I'm not arguing about supporting them financially, in fact I agree totally, but only if they're operated by a non-profit org. But when it's the council running them I think they should be free to all, and they certainly shouldn't be making money off it. Council's are there to serve the community, not make money off it!
