One of five or six Timber Wolves that have escaped from Colchester Zoo is still on the loose. Two have been shot dead. Can't see it ending well :(

Got through a hole in the fence. Wonder how that happened.

It wasn't the clearest of sentences....Six wolves in total. Five escaped. One returned on its own, one was darted, two shot dead. One on the run.

Why did they have to shoot it dead? It said it was cowering in fear. Could a tranq not have been used? We'll never know I guess.

At a guess there are more people around with bullets up the spout than tranquilizer darts and it was the wolf's bad luck that it was one of them who was closest when it was cornered.

The answer is on the link in the post before yours:

"One of the wolves returned immediately of its own accord and one was darted and recaptured. Unfortunately, an anaesthetic dart takes 15 minutes to take effect and may not work at all in a stressed animal so two wolves that had left the perimeter of the zoo had to be shot. They are wild animals and in an unpredictable situation they would have posed a risk to the public."

However, that statement (from the zoo PR) does contradict what they were saying earlier (and subsequently removed) about the wolves posing no threat. Anyway, no doubt difficult circumstances to manage and shooting the creatures is probably the least risky and most cost effective option. Essex police do like to wheel out their marksmen when animals are involved though such as this incident a couple of years ago shooting a bullock and a couple of cows!

I'm guessing they didn't want to start a widespread panic?..... just a thought.......

At the end of the day, they are wild animals and pretty unpredictable once outside of their enclosure. If one had been darted but ran off and killed a todler I think there may have been questions asked why more robust action wasn't taken ;)

The zoo/police were in a no win situation in my opinion.
