My 40D has died :(

Err 99

I've changed batteries (both)

Tried with other lenses

Fired with no lens or CF card (so not a contact problem)

And it still Err 99s

The shutter sounds decidely odd so I think its repair time!

Anyone any useful experience of the Canon repair service?

Think I've seen a company called Fixation recommended a few times - think they give priority to pros - have not used them myself though

Good luck with the repair

Al

Lehmans (sp) is an excellent place for Canon service! Highly highly helpful, experienced, knowledgeable!!

Thanks Al, Fixation noted

I was not impressed with the ones at Colchester, have not tried Canon itself. Have been using Protech for minor lens and CP repairs. If you do contact them just say the "lady with the swan problem" referred you as that is what they call me after fixing my lens after it got dented by one :D

Cheers 'Swan Lady' :D I shall have a look at them too!

Ta Dave - all suggestions much appreciated :)

I have used Lehmanns and was happy with them. There are shed loads of folk on here though that have not been too impressed. How about Canon Elstree, their own service centre. Bad luck on the 40d, hope you get it sorted soon.

Had the same thing happen on my 40D.. have ordered a spare shutter assembly for a something like $40 from ebay :D

Will attempt the impossible myself and replace the shutter...

Thanks Sara..added to my list :)

Thats brave :) Good luck Jukka :)

I had a Compact Canon fail, they arranged a repair with a local camera engineer, I think it was ready to collect in a week, Was quite happy with that,

However it was the second Canon compact that had failed on my so it was one of the reasons that I went Nikon

I have the 40D repair manual fortunately, shows exact steps on how to dismantle and reassemble the whole shebang :)

Yep, another for Fixation. For what it's worth, a shutter replacement on my D2x was £300, but half that was labour and parts for removing the rubber grips and weather seals. Otherwise it would have been £150(ish).

I sent a nikon lens to fixtion to be repaired and came back within a week

Thanks for the various suggestions, geography got the better of me seeing that the Canon shop at Elstree was not far out of my journey up to the Midlands this week.

I have to say if first impressions are anything to go by their service is pretty damn good

I hope it stays that way :)

:agree: I have only good things to say about Canon Elstree. Even without the CPS membership they have been quick at turning round items and very efficient tracking.

They even packed it better than I did for the return journey (I used approx 2 miles of bubblewrap)

Fixation here too although their communications are not as good as they should be.

Good luck getting it fixed John...

I'm sorry to go off topic... but I have to ask...

Christine, how the hell did you get a lens dented by a swan ?

Matt Grant John - thanks for the replies

Just heard from Canon that my 40D is fixed (as is RobertPs 50mm 1.4 that I took in for him at the same time)

Picking up on the way home tomorrow :)

That was nice and quick methinks :)

Excellent... that was nice and fast

Looks like I need to sort out some money......

Excellent service from dark star couriers too

Could you not have picked my 5D2 up at the same time? That's at Elstree for a quick fix!! I'm sure that Dark Star Couriers could get it out to Spain!!!

Oh Sara of course I would have been happy to pick it up :)

However you'd never see it again :D :lol::wave:

I just got a text with tracking number for my camera, it should arrive tomorrow. I sent it to Canon Elstree arrived with them on the 28th so not too bad a turn arorund.

Well so far I've been impressed by their service - plus my 40D now enjoys 6 months full warranty and not just for the fixed part (I've yet to learn what that was !) Its been out of warranty for a year or so

:)

Protech were the ones that destroyed a brand new (zero actuations) D40 I sent them to do an IR conversion on. Messed me about for a month and then tried to fob me off with a well-used D40x (claiming it was new). I wouldn't trust them to change the battery in a camera, never mind do any repairs....

Well I picked it up today in fine working order :)

They replaced the shutter assembly, gave it a wash and brush up and I walk away with a working 40D and 6 months warranty :D

Excellent service and I'd use them again for sure :)

I;ve had stuff repaired in Colchester. Not great with face to face service, but repairs OK.

Yep mine arrived at about 12:30 the day after it was sent. All cleaned and serviced.

So the general consensus is that everyone's happy with Elstree?!

I need to send my mkIII and 400L to be calibrated and I'm torn between Fixation and Canon.

I reckon I'm going to go with Canon as they'll be able to calibrate one to another, to manufacturers specs.

Does everyone agree?! ;)

I can only go on my immediate experience James and they scored high with me (just noticed they even upgraded my firmware :))

Not sure how the prices compare but I saved the cost of postage as I could get there myself quite easily!

They didn't do very well for my 30D which has never been fixed correctly...but they work out a lot cheaper than Fixation. Though it will necessitate a drive to Elstree as I'm not paying for the ridiculous cost of sending £7000 of kit that weighs nearly 10kg...plus I want to demonstrate the problem.

It's all just very annoying that this seems to keep happening, top level kit should not be this inconsistent.

It's good to hear your 40D has been resurrected and coaxed back into life, John, and it's always refreshing to hear about good service - both the repairers and the couriers. :D

I can hear a sigh of relief from your piggybank, knowing it's not going to be forking out for a 5Dmk2 just yet. :D

Ta Jean but don't bet on the piggybank's sigh just yet ;)

Canon operate a fixed price repair service, for my 40D it was £153, for RobertP's 50mm f1.4 with knackered autofocus £102

Oh my, I see what the fuss was about with the receptionist...very pretty. She even laughed at my jokes and was even empathetic about not giving me a 70-200 lens mug.
