Sorry about a useless post but I found it hard to resist
I'm a bit of a newbie so afraid I can't help but I'm sure that one of the many knowledgable members will be along soon

Might be useful to outline which areas of photography you're most interested in/do, and/or likely to with moving up to the DSLR level.

Wildlife, landscape, portrait, architecture, motorsports, etc.

Any particular reason you're focusing on just Canon and Nikon?
Thought about Sony, Pentax, Olympus?
What's your budget?
Do you have a tripod already or will that and a bag need to be included with budget?

Ok £500 I have tripod and bag as for what I'm into taking I'm a bit of a all rounder landscapes, night, home studio, wedding etc. so it is just a camera

Oh and as for make I not really sure why it might be just the case when I see a professional photographer the mostly have one of the 2 canon or nikon

The main advantage of Canon and Nikon is the massive array of lenses. Pros tend to need a varied lot so I imagine that's a main reason; personally I found Canon the best fit but being able to share lenses with a traveling bud cos in handy too.

I could be missing it but can't see what the two lenses are there. Is probably an 18-55 and 55-250 for the price though which is okay to start with for general use but might be limiting if you are used to a bridge superzoom.

The 550D is a perfectly good starting camera though age wise not sure how good the higher isos are. Best thing to do is pop into jessops with a memory card and try out the 550D, a Nikon and have a look to see if others will give you a better deal especially if your never going to want numerous lenses. Again it's personal but a workmate shoots Sony and complains about the lack of lens options.

I'm getting to the limits of the lumix it's a cracking camera but no bulb setting so star trails I can't do and other stuff

I misread the thread and thought it was about Lumix so I'll add my bit....

A few months back I went from a Canon bridge camera to the 600d (pretty much the same as the 550 except just has a rotating rear screen), and have the 250 lens....since then I am a bit of a photo addict, the camera goes everywhere I go.
Wasn't overly impressed when I first took photos with it but as time went by I soon realised it was my little knowledge of DSLR's that was the problem, now 99% of the time I shoot in manual mode and always in RAW and then just do a few tweaks in photoshop, know very little about Nikons but as for the Canon if you are anything like me you'll love it, yes there are better, and more expensive full frame cameras out there, but for the money with both lens I'd say go for it but be careful....you'll be scanning the classified for more goodies to add to the collection

I think you have just confirmed what I allready thought thank you and yes probably will be constantly looking for extras

I think you are rite by going for Nikon and Canon simply because of the amount of Lens and extras they carry and like someone said on earlier always nice to share with you mate if he shots the same. Think to be honest they are much of a muchness. there are some that swear by Canon and some that swear by Nikon. I personally use Nikon but only because when i started thats what i was recommended but Canon are equally as good. Thought i would add something to this as there are No Nikon posts.

One more thing i would add would be buy something a little more advanced than you want because you will soon out grow what you get and be looking to up grade so why not take that step now rather than later. Just a thought.

All the best with your quest.

There is the problem I'm having I don't know enough about dslrs to know what I need ie whats the difference between a 550d and a 650d or a 1d apart from a lot of money

Keep asking question to the guys and gals on here and you will be able to build a picture of your needs. Dont get drawn into the usual of who is the best Nikon Or Canon just go with what you decide. if that makes sense.
I always ask on here just to aid a decision.
All the best.

Just a word of warning the75-300 is cheap for a reason, iq isn't great and it has no IS. The copy I used was very old but after borrowing it for a day had had enough. The 55-250 is only about £170 on Amazon and at least has IS, I've not used it but believe is a better bet; if you go Canon of course, some Nikons are apparently ok :-P

I have a 550D and love it. It was a present with a 15-85mm lens which is a great all rounder lens I think, but more expensive than the kits lens.

I don't know about the Nikons, but I think with each later model of any brand you do get a few more bells and whistles.

I personally don't think I'd be fussed about the articulated screen of the 600D, but I think it also has a few inbuilt options which I'd have enjoyed playing with - like toy camera effect, fisheye etc. I think it also has an inbuilt trigger for wireless flash - allowing you to use an external flash off the camera.

Generally the more expensive cameras may have a bigger sensor, allow you to take more photos more quickly in succession (more frames per second and better processors), more buttons to allow quick access to change settings more quickly, are bigger, heavier and give you better image quality. I might have missed a few things off that list :)

Although I would now like more frames per second for action shots, I think I will always want to hang onto my 550D because of it's compact size. I'd prefer a 600D though!

I'm sure this question comes up a lot I have a lumix fz100 and its time to go dslr I've be looking at this

http://www.jessops.com/online.store...ns Kit - Exclusive to Jessops-85580/Show.html

I want to go with canon or nikon is there a nikon I should look at
The 2lenses

Thank you the second lens is a 75-300

Hi Iain

The 550D is a good camera to start off with, I'd certainly recommend getting the standard (18-55) kit lens with the body, but personally I wouldn't get the 75-300 lens - it's an old lens and not particularly good.

If you are after a 2nd lens, I'd recommend the Canon 55-250IS to go with the 18-55 kit lens...

Good luck with your new camera if you get it and enjoy it...

Thank you all this has be very interesting and useful I'm going to look at 600d my lumix has a tilting screen and I do like that thanks again guys
