Hi, im upgrading to a D750 for event and night life. i was wondering what kind of lens is best?

Ive been using a 70-200mm (But i could settle for a 150mm) as i like doing shots from a far. Most times i struggle with quick AF and low light and of course bluring at times.

my buget is around £600.

i been looking at lens like the:

Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM

Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 EX APO DG HSM

Any advice would be amazing to fit on the D750

Thank you

I already mentioned the Nikon f/4 70-200 VR in your other thread.

If DXOmark has got it right, the Nikon is sharper than the Sigma 120-300 which is sharper than the Sigma 70-200.

Against that the Nikon loses 1 stop. I've had the debate at length with myself about this one stop (choosing between f/2.8 Nikon instead of the f/4). The f/4 is a lot lighter, and the D750 (which I use) is pretty solid at ISO 3200 so to me one stop isn't a big deal. All those lenses have stabilisation too, so you can pinch a stop or two on the shutter speed as well.

In fairness you could stop the f/2.8 Sigma down to f/4 where it should be near the sharpness of the Nikon wide open. But then you are lugging the extra weight to no purpose:)

The Sigma 70-200 weighs 1294g. The Sigma 120-300 is 2950g. The Nikon f/4 is 850g (all according to DXOmark).

Isn't it fun spending other people's money!

The Sigma 120-300 is excellent optically BUT heavy and unwieldy for hand holding for event photography. Fine in a hide where you can rest it on a window sill or support it on a tripod/gimbal.

thanks for the advice, im looking at one on ebay:

Nikon Nikkor AF-S 70-200mm F4 G ED VR lens.

would this be the one your talking about?

also there are a few others

Nikon NIKKOR 70-200mm AF-S F2.8G ED VR II Zoom Lens

Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED VR AF-S Nikkor

Nikon 70-200mm AF-S Nikkor F2.8G ED GII ED Lens

would any of these 3 be an upgrade to the above of about the same ? :)

TBH, for the night-life mentioned in the OP, I'd be wanting the extra stop that the f/2.8 would give me over the f/4. If the subjects aren't going to be moving, I would quite like VR but that might be less useful with mobile subjects.

Yes that's the f/4.

This is just me collating information I have looked at before and drawing my own conclusions...I haven't used any of these, but I am minded to buy the f/4 myself. If you want to go to the horse's mouth look at the DXOmark lens data and numerous other reviews.

The first of those f/2.8's you list is I believe very similar in optical performance to the f/4. It is therefore an "upgrade" to the f/4 in so far as it has a larger maximum aperture. It was made from 2009 to 2016.

The second is a very good lens made from 2003-2009 and the predecessor to the first, which slightly improved on it - both are/were serious professional lenses with very good optical performance. The VR is improved on the later version.

The third one is the same as the first one - if you look at the pictures in this review of the f/2.8 VRII you'll see it has the "GII" in the descriptor on the lens.
