Hi guys, how much would you say this is worth, plus a lens, cable release and a few darkslides?

If its the one on eBay atm and has a working lens and the kit you mention very easily the current price. they sell new for about £650 if its the current version

Linky

Depending on condition, up to £500 or so on a good day. I paid a bit less than that for my Wista.

I'd be surprised if it actually goes for what it's at now, it's a pretty good camera!

Ahh thanks guys, and thanks for the link.

I am looking for a large format for next semester at university. Also for my 3rd year my personal project. I would like to do something with Large format.

I wish mate, I am looking to buy. Was leaning towards a field camera for portability, but now may have to get a mono rail.

For portability i would go with nothing other than a field camera. I could imagine carrying a mono rail for the work im wanting to do. My camera bag already weighs 35lb!
The field camera i have, the shen hao HZX 5x4 II has a good range of movements and it well finished. wont break the bank either!

Currently looking at a Toyo view camera. Its very sturdy, easy to use and accurate. The one I'm looking at in particular is very clean and looks pretty well looked after.

Just need to find a good lens for it.

Anyone have any recommendations? Best place to find a lens in the NW, recommended lens for around 200 quid?

I got my lens of ebay. I paid less for the 5.6 model than someone was asking for the f/8. By the time i had paid for shipping it still worked out about £60 cheaper!!

I just got my new 90mm from MXV. Brilliant service and shutter has obviously been serviced as everything is nice and tight. Not sure of any 2nd hand specialists up north.

There are plenty cheap lenses on fleabay. I would start with something around 135 or 150mm. Which is around 40-50ish in 35mm terms. My Symmar-S 135 is tiny and was under 200 when I got it. it's also got good coverage and is f5.6 so nice and bright on the ground glass.

I wouldn't worry about the age of the lens as not much has changed in 50 or 60 years apart from the coverage and the coatings really. A lot of the lens designs are exactly the same.

Anecdotal evidence would indicate (and my own experience) that even a cheap lens on 5x4, provided it's been looked after, will make yellow water over anything you've used before!

btw.

Don't forget to budget £20 or so for a lens panel, £10 for a lens wrench and a few squid for a cable release!

there is a rather nice Sinar f1 on ebay at the mo for just £175.

I don't know what kind of photography you're planning on but a mono-rail needn't mean lack of portability. It's just that you will need to plan where you go well. If you're never gonna be more than 1/2 a mile or so from the car or home or studio then it wont be so bad.

Oh, and finally. Most Uni's that do a photography course will have a LF camera or 2 kicking about somewhere that you should be able to use.

I know my uni have a camera, they have a few LF in fact. I wanted to get my own for next year, for my personal project. Its funny you mention the Sinar f1 I am picking one up tomorrow if all goes to plan.

Thanks for the comments Gandhi. I love LF and want to delve deeper into it. Il let you know how I get on.
