Yes
I love my compact camera but the shutter speed is too slow for photographing my dogs speeding around . I was thinking of a DSLR but dont think I want to lug everything around as I take my compact everywhere .
Would a bridge camera suit .....is there one with the specs I need to photograph my super fast dogs ?? My birthday is coming up and getting a new camera bought for me no matter which one I go for .....so please can you help . The priority is to photograph my dogs .

I think the Bridge Camera will do as it gives owing to their huge zoom lenses handling and relatively compact proportions and will sure be good capture for dogs images.

SS speed too slow? Or focus speed? I would expect the latter, not so much the first. Look for "phase detection" autofocus, not sensor based, and a bridge will be a nice step up.

We've just been to a camera shop and when I told him what I wanted he showed me all the DSLR'S , he wasn't intetested in showing me a bridge camera .....so we've come away no better off .

Has your compact camera got a sports scene mode? I'd try that first if it does.

I'm surprised no manufacturer has built in a 'manic dog' scene mode really :)

If the compact is more than a few years old then check out some of the newer ones. There are bound to be ones with much faster auto focus around than there used to be.

Bridge camera will also be quite good but it won't be pocketable in the slightest.

A good bridge theres no reason why auto focus or shutter speed would eb a problem... However...

Shutter lag is a problem wiht a bridge camera for fast action photogrpahy.. If a dog or anyhting else ir moving at fast speed (you will be at a wide open aperture to get the shutter speed) the time between pressing the shutter and taking the picture is too long and the subject is out of focus..

I would say thats the problem and the salesman was right to point you towards a dslr.. had he sold you a bridge and you couldnt get a decent action shot then your going to slag him and his shop off for not knowing what he is talkign about..

For all the people suggesting a bridge camera... show me the pictures of fast moving dogs taken with a bridge..

To totally turn around everyhting above.. It can be done with a bridge if you learn "pre emptive photography" and are happy to have a 1/100 keeper rate :)

Yes it does have sports mode but its just to slow and dog is blurred ......been practising my panning skills and played around will all settings on my camera for about a year and getting nowhere fast .

He suggested I buy the Sony A65 .......

I have a good budget of £1500 but dont want to spend that much when I've got lenses etc

buy used dslr and a used 70-200 lens.. you would be best looking for the best FPS you can find to help capture.. presuming your doing this in daylight then each dslr will be samey samey... the only real thing you need to lok for is fatsest frame per second to help capture the moment..

all this based on capturing dogs in fast action photography :)

PS
Never had or know anyonw with sony.. looking at the spec.. the 10 frames per second beats just about anything for canon/nikon at same price...i think :) I think th eguy in the shop was pointing you in right direction.. personally i dont see the point in buying new.. but..

I shoot Sony. Nothing wrong with the A65 at all. There's also the cheaper A58 which was on the gadget show against the Nikon 5200 and some canon thing last night. Worth a look. The Nikon 5200 looks quite good too. I'd try that against the Sony and see which you prefer.

Hiya Suz , I was originally looking at the Panasonic TZ40 but as for AF , I havent got a clue what I should be looking for to allow for the speed of my dogs ......my friend has the TZ40 and she photographs her parrots indoors flying without a blur in sight !! I dont really care if its a point and shoot , a bridge , a dslr as long as I get the photo results that I want of my dogs and also enjoy a bit of macro .....

Can you have a go with her tz40 and your dogs? If that works then it's saved you a fortune :)

Unfortunately not , she lives in London and we're in Preston
I dont know anyone who is into photography either ! So I have to rely on this forum and the man in the camera shop lol

We've realised just by reading reviews that a lot of comments made are more about the video mode of the camera than the stills side of things !! Its like that with them all !! I have a good cam corder . I want a camera that takes great pictures , I'm not bothered about video side of things and yet thats what the experts dwell on ......it seems a bit bizarre . I was imagining what things they could improve on a camera if they didn't have all the video side of technologies .....maybe they should have 2 models of camera , one with video and one without .....
