Wisdom teeth removal.

I went to the dentist today with bad tooth ache that kept me up all night, only to find out that I have to get some wisdom teeth surgically removed at hospital, on both sides of my mouth. The dentist said it would be better if I get put to sleep because the wisdom teeth are growing sideways underneath my gums and pushing against the side of my molars. Just to add to all this he said nicely to me that they are well buried in the bone...great lol. You can't tell by looking in my mouth, my teeth just look normal. Don't worry I'm going to have a lovely 6month wait to get them removedo_O

Has anyone else had to have this done? I'm getting a shiver down my spine just thinking about the dentist again lol.

I hased haved all my wisdoms removalled.

More sensibly, I have had all mine out but one by one in the dentist's chair. Recently had several extractions (non wisdom) and am glad the stumps have gone! At least he's been honest with you and they're going to do them in one fell swoop so it'll all be over quickly (and you'll be out for the procedure). Fun? Probably not but by the sound of it, you'll be better off without the offending teeth.
 
Makes you wonder how we humans coped in the past, before dentists came along, with these wisdom teeth growing in wierd and wonderful directions.
 
Plenty would have died had the resulting problems developed into abcesses.
 
Yes, I had 3 of mine removed by the Dental surgeon as a bit like you 1 of mine was lying almost horizontal under the molar in front and causing regular infections in the gum. My dentist said he would happily take the others out but not that one.
It was a full anaesthetic operating room job with chopped open gums and stitching. However the couple of days of discomfort were well worth it to get rid of the problem.
Just hope you're not like my sister who when she got hers done had the full hamster cheeks look and bruising that made her look as if she'd gone 12 rounds with Mike Tyson :-)
 
Had one removed a few years ago at the same time as a cyst was being removed. I was in agony for the next 5 days, couldn't eat, open my mouth, nothing. I found out when I went back to have the stitches removed that some incompetent *@%* had stitched my cheek to my gum. Good luck!
 
I had exactly the same done as the OP at the start of December, thankfully via my wife's private medical insurance. Due to the position of one of the teeth I was out under general, and ended up having a piece of jaw bone removed too.

I was second into theatre and under for about an hour. No after effects from the general (which was a major concern). After the op, went back to my room and dozed for a couple of hours, had a big ham sandwich to eat and saw the consultant, after which my wife took me home.

The rest of that day was blissful, I had no pain or discomfort at all as they filled the area with local anesthetic plus gave me extra pain killers.

However, I can't lie, about 03:00 I woke up in agony afte everything wore off. A good dose of codeine and paracetamol took the edge off, and the next three days were manageable, but very uncomfortable. Worst thing was that the tissue in the side of my mouth swelled so much I couldn't actually close my mouth (they cut more than expected and I had 15 stitches), so my jaw ached from keeping it open. In the end I jammed a plastic spoon in there to act as a wedge and I could relax my jaw.

By the 5th day I was feeling loads better and it seemed to recover very quickly after that. Absolutely no complications or further intrusions necessary. I religiously did the warm salt water mouth wash four times a day, from day 3 (don't do it too soon as you can dislodge the blood clot), and brushed my teeth lots to both keep my mouth clean and feel better.

You'll be absolutely fine!
 
Had mine done (both sides) having previously been told that I didn't have any wisdom teeth!

Went to the doctor with earache and was referred to the ENT at Worthing hospital who X-rayed me and told me it was my teeth! :eek:

Had them all done at once under a general anaesthetic and was a bit groggy for a couple of days, but no further trouble.

....been 11 years now.:)
 
I just want the next 6months to hurry up. I don't mind going for surgery if it means I'll be feeling better afterwards and it certainly can't be worse than waiting six months with constant pain lol. I didn't even know I had wisdom teeth and I've had countless x-rays done of my mouth and the topic has never come up before. I'm on some strong antibiotics for an infection they have cause and feeling a bit better now. Hopefully tonight I can actually sleep, back to work tomorrow.

Paul, might be worth telling them you will take a cancellation at short notice. (if you can!)
 
They were the ones who suggested that. I gladly accepted to take any cancellation :)
 
Paul, last time (fairly recently... :( ) I had to take antibiotics for a dental problem, it took almost a week for the pain to subside completely but in the meantime, Nurofen Plus (Ibuprofen and Codeine) kept it under control. On the plus side, the binding effect of the Codeine went some way towards reducing the reverse effect of the antibiotics!
 
I went to an orthodontist to have my wisdom tooth out as it hadn't come through properly and was causing abcesses. I was told by my dentist it would be an operation job and wasn't looking forward to it. However, the orthodontist decided to have a go while I was in the chair and after a couple of painless injections and about 5 minutes of fiddling about my wisdom tooth was out. There was hardly any blood, no pain after the injections had worn off and after a few days I was eating normally again and haven't had an abcess since. Excellent job for me.
 
My brother in law is a dentist, he took all my wisdom teeth out a few years ago,one side at a time with a two month delay between either side. Not a pleasant experience.
