Right, i have tried to do a google search for this, because i really really like the concept and it would be great for a house like ours...

I want a stereo, which i can set up speakers too (preferably wireless but not neccessarily) which can be set up in a sort of wireless network with all the laptops in the house.

so say for example it has a media player which appears on all the computers in the house, and we can drag certain choones into the media player from our computers, and it will play on the stereo downstairs

i would also like the speakers to be set up individually, so you can choose which ones are on - living room speaker, hallway speaker, etc

does anyone have any idea where i would find out about this sort of system, and if it would cost more than say 1000

cheers

yes you can buy wireless speakers, or complicated control devices to control each set in each room

problem is its not cheap and wireless speakers tend to suffer drop out

Take a look at Sonos systems. www.simplysonos.co.uk
They do a pretty neat range of wireless devices with a wireless controller.
Just put one in recently.

The larger unit (ZP120) has a built in amp, so can drive speakers, or you can get the small unit (ZP90) which needs either active speakers or an amp.

Only thing to note though, is one of the units needs to be plugged into your network, but you can get a Sonos Bridge that can do this so your music playing units can be elsewhere.

Cheers

hmm, well i am happy with wired speakers, i have been having a look and a few places do something that would work. i just need to buy a decent stereo and then fit the dongle

the thing i am struggling to find, is something with one reciever that i can set up to many lap tops.

sonos look good, albeit expensive!! might give them a call and see how feasible it is.

sonos was the one i was thinking of. Get in touch with a home cinema installation company, they should be able to give you some advice...but get a second opinion just in case..

my friend Grant is on it too, hes a aucoustics expert so really really up on all the gizmos!

hopefully i can find something that will wireless-ly connect to the already setup wireless network we have in the house.

It should be doable! will keep you posted!

I have a setup along those lines, but it does require a certain standardisation which may become obvious:

Mac G5 and MacBook Pro with shared iTunes libraries, Airport wireless network, Airport Express with speakers connected via the audio jack. Plug the Express in where you want the music, select the speakers in iTunes and you're off. Can also utilise an existing hi-fi by plugging the Express into the Audio In.

have sorted it

Logitech Squeeze box. allows you to play music from a PC or lap top, on your home HiFi... 100quid

not too bad!

to go with it i have ordered some Scandyna/Bluebox Drop speakers and am looking into a decent amp to go with it all! Exciting days!

much cheaper than a Sonos system, much better for my arrangement and some wonderful bits of kit!
