I'm hoping someone can help or lead me in the right direction somehow

I use on our home PC a USB wireless dongle which plugs into the back of the PC, which lately has been dropping its connection. I've tried a different wireless dongle as I thought it maybe that, but alas same problem.

The only other thing that has changed recently is the wireless router as we have swapped broadband suppliers and gone onto Sky. I don't particularly want to move the router as it sits more or less in the middle of the house and services a couple of laptops, a couple of X boxes and the home PC which are fairly well spread all over the house.

What I'm guessing I need to do is to move the USB dongle away from the back of the PC and out into the 'open' more so it gets a better sight to the router.

Can anyone recommend any plug in USB 'thingies' for me to try, I'm not quite sure what I'm looking for or where to get from :D
 
Sounds like the new router you've got has a weaker signal than your old router. You may possibly be able to change this in the router settings. I could probably tell you exactly how, but i'll leave it to someone who knows exactly what they're talking about.
To get you started though, login to your router, which is usually either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 (put it in your address bar of firefox/ie).
 
Thanks for the replies, I'll try changing channels and see how that goes :thumbs:

It doesn't affect the laptop furthest away from the router, so I guessed it wouldn't be a problem such as that. I was working on the principle that as the USB dongle is in the back of the PC it can have a lot of interference from everything else surrounding it!

I'll see how that goes and report back :D

I'm with Sky.

When I joined them a couple of years ago the router they supply was always dropping the signal. After speaking to my computer engineer he replaced it with a Linksys one which is superb. Quite frankly the Sky router is crap!

Thanks for that KoG I think the router supplied is a netgear router looking at it, so I'm suprised if it turns out to be the problem.

Maybe I'll have a look at the link you've posted, I haven't had a nose at what it's doing today. I'll let the Wife report (read: moan) back about that one :lol:
 
Sky provide Netgear DG384G or DG384GT routers.

"Think of your WiFi Signal as a donut perched on each antenna. This donut is about 400+ feet in diameter and about 40 feet thick, the hole is pretty small, and the donut gets thicker farther out until it expands into nothingness (signal loss)."

So the higher the doughnut is, the better. I would also check you have the latest drivers for the dongle.

OK, now you have managed to lose me completely.

I've tried a variety of channels and all fail at some point.

What I need to do is to move the dongle from the back of the PC into a more clear air view I'm guessing where it should have less interference.

Can anyone recommend any such gizmo's for plugging into a PC one end and a dongle in the other end :D

You just need a simple USB extension cable to do that.

Get a USB extension cable to move the wireless usb stick away from the pc.

EDIT: beaten to it!
 
hi , all you need is a usb extension lead, they do them in pc world for about £5 , i had the same problem but inserted a usb extension lead between pc and dongle and now have dongle approx 3foot above pc now with a strong signal
 
i think you need a USB extension cable. cant believe no one's suggested one yet !
