Hi all,
I am looking for a remote shutter release for my beloved canon 40D and I have looked into a few options, I wanted some opinions and reviews if you can share with me and which would be a suitable option.
I did see a few on Ebay, but worried about getting it late or never!
1) Phottix C8
2) Hahnel HW 433 C80
3) Hama with RS 80 N3
4) Youg Nuo

Any ideas or suggestions, it needs to be wireless and reasonably priced.
Thanks for your comments and suggestions
Raj.

Oh, I was just doing the same thing. the C8 seems to get good reviews but I'll be very interested in anything that comes up on this thread.

Replied to keep track of this, looking for one also!

I'm keeping track of this thread too, I have a 450d though and I have no idea about wireless remotes lol!

You can use one of these can't you?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00007EEA3/ref=s9_subs_gw_s0_p23_t1?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-1&pf_rd_r=1ZP9E7C9AGV9K1GC5222&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=467198433&pf_rd_i=468294

The 450D has an infra red receiver i thought, like the earlier models of XXXD canons.

The 40D doesn't so we need a different route.

Got the Phottix one. A trader on here was selling them. Very pleased and has good range, not that you want to be too far from your camera:lol:
Dean:)

I saw a test on the Hahnel HW 433 pro in the Digital Photo mag May 09, I wanted one for my 450D, I PHONED W-Express 4pm Friday, delivered before 8am Saturday, 16 hours, used it a couple of times but not to the limit, firstly on a bird feed station form about 12 yds, then from about 20 yds through the closed patio window, fired every time, pleased so far, cost about £37 :):)

Get the Canon RC-1 (wireless) for the xxxD, or if you want wired (no batteries) then get the Canon RS-60E3.

For the xxD, the Canon RS-80N3 (wired) is the way to go. It's about £40. I just bought one for my 50D. :)

I've got a JJC wr-100. It does exactly what it says on the tin. About £44 I think.

Disadvantage of the IR ones, is that you need to be in front of the camera in order to fire it. I am considering a wireless (or a long wire), so I can set my camera up for some birdy shots.

Don't get the Canon IR one!!! It sucks!

There is a thread about its suckyness on here recently.

Go for one of the HK radio remotes, although I did have to buy two to get a working one... (so cheap it wasn't worth paying to return the duff one to HK)

I'd be interested to see a link desantnik. Did a search there but couldn't find much..

I've got the Phottix C8, does the job with my 30D / 50D

I think i'll look for one of the HK ones desantnik mentions as cheap sounds good to me :)

I don't understand why people would want to buy expensive Canon cameras, expensive Canon lenses (opposed to cheaper Sigma/Tamron (etc) lenses) and then settle for cheap HK equiptment over genuine Canon gear...

Because this is just a switch... nothing about this component will improve the quality of your photos compared to buying a Canon part. Its not clever, hi-tech or inovative design, its a switch...

Sure the HK ones might break a bit sooner, but at about a quarter of the price (including shipping), most will take the view that its a fairly safe bet...

You've got a point.

Ever since I swapped my canon neck strap for an op-tech strap I've had no end of back focus issues, and just don't mention the low ISO noise issues I've got with using 7day shop batteries :bang:

;)

I bought a cheap HK one nearly 2 years ago, with out the slightest problem ..also bought some spare batteries on line, Though I have not needed to use them yet.
As I remember it, it was very cheap but it has been 100% reliable so far. If it gave up tomorrow I would not think it owed me anything.
I use it in preference to my electric release as I can stand where I like.

I bought the Hama one off ebay last week. New for £29.99 UK distributer.
Range is excellent and it works through walls. I can set a camera up down the bottom of the garden and photograph the birds from the kitchen :)

Don't get hung up on the make, if it does the job just as well whats the problem :cuckoo:

Hello All,
Thank you for your comments, advice, suggestions and even rants! I finally went through 4 days of searching, tearing hair and losing my mid night sleep:thinking:
Finally looking into price, reviews, face to face interviews (:help:) I settled and bought a Hama C2 RS-80 E3. Looks right, works right and hopefully last right! Will probably put a review later once I put it to good use over the week.
Cheerio.

Agreed :), I don't know why people pay £40 for a wired remote from canon when you can get a HK one for 1/4 the price :) again refure above its a switch, there is nothing else to it :).

I have a wireless remote for my 40D think it was £15 :) works a treat and is stil going strong 6months in :).

The Phottix C8 is on ebay from HKsupplies for £16.99 inc postage :)

Cheers grubby

Howevere I also found the new Mega Cleon C8, which is an updated version of the Phottix C8 with a larger transmitter, apparently it "delivers more power and transmitting stability" £20.99 delivered. I might go for one of those.

from what i've read the Hahnel HW 433 C80 greats great reviews and the rep showed us a 5 star review in one of the mags this month, but i decided to go for a Phottix C8 instead after another rep brought one in (our shop doesn't stock em) but simply because it runs on the 2.4ghz frequencies so that they actually communicate both ways so things like bulb setting and continuous shooting mode work as well getting confirmation that the camera is in range (i'm not going to test 100m)

also you have a wrist strap on the remote woo.
