Wondering what you use and recommend for broke photographers lol. I do this for fun so want some options on brand name and off brand.

Yongnuo RF602 or RF603's can't fault the RF 603's got 5 of em.

How do they hold up? Seem very cheap (good thing) do they get the job done or do you have to play with them to get them to work right? Also have you been shooting in an open area or around/near obstacles?

They are radio so fine up to a reasonable distance and without line of sight ;)

What kind of stands are you using and what flashes? Also are you using soft boxes?

Bowens 500Rs for indoor and Profoto for location (Bowans stands for both). I use all sorts of modifiers but for portrait work I'd start with a decent sizes soft box 1m x 1m, and build from there.

Got mine here

Look at this on eBay:

Yongnuo RF-603 wireless flash trigger 3PCS for Canon C3 1D 5D II 7D 50D 40D 30D

Any other off brands you could think of? I'd like some sort of choice lol.

There are loads of wireless triggers out there but it all boils down to budget and if you require ettl or not

I use Phottix odin's ettl for canon (Nikon due out shortly I believe) which is great for full ettl/manual control of speed lights as well as a set of calumet pro series (rebadged phottix atlas and also pocket wizard compatible) that work out to about £150 a pair.

The Phottix Strato is also a good set with ettl pass through on the transmitter (calumet do a rebadged version of these to for £50)

The are loads on eBay that are cheap and will do the job so the choice is yours really

Tbh if I were you I would find a couple of sets that you fancy and ask for opinions on them ;)

Im all over the hahnel combi tf triggering system. Works both ways, is 2.5ghz so is constant and never fails (not with me anyway)
As a camera remote can provide bulb single and continuous shooting, has studio strobe connectivity and works like a dream. Does not have ettl but I've never needed it so no love lost there.
Can run a bank of four receivers/triggers, whichever floats your boat and extra receivers are inexpensive.
I've tried the cheaper ones with little success and frugal as i am i can say the combi tf is a great buy

I'd like ettl

We bought a load of Pocket Wizards but regret it to be honest. They do have ETTL but we never use it. If you can get something that lets you up and down power from camera, that's all you need.

We rarely use speedlites on location now. We almost always use our Elinchrom Ranger Quadra's which have Skyport receivers built is, as does our Elinchrom studio gear. Skyports are so much more reliable than the Pocket Wizards that are fiddly, unreliable and expensive. Skyports are very reliable, nicely built and cheap (especially if your lights have receivers built in).

Never heard of that with pocket wizards dang

More precisely Mini Pocket Wizards - MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 for Canon

Would you not need one sky port trigger and one receiver as the flash head connected to the receiver would trigger the other units?

i saw a thread on here a while back regarding Phottix and a pocketwizard clone that they made. Then they stopped making them and another oem brand picked up the design but i cant find the name anywhere.

Anyone know who it might be?

Think you probably mean the Phottix Atlas, which was a Poketwizard Plus II clone with a hotshoe.

It was released by Interfit as the Titan, and I think Calumet just called it their radio trigger.

Ah yeah, thats it, the Atlas. But you cant get them anywhere under that name anyway. I think it was the interfit one i saw somewhere, thanks :) i'll do a bit of googling.

Amazon are doing the Interfits for £75

Interfit Triggers

It doesnt have an option on the description so i guess they work fine with canon and nikon? Its hard to beleive the pocket wizards are twice the price when its the same components! blooming cheek.

They work fine with canon and Nikon :) and calumet do a twin pack for £150 so at least you can still get hold of them :)

I use the Atlas triggers and they have never missed a beat, I replaced my Bowens Pulsars withe the Atlas due to the failure rate of the pulsars and have never looked back, the Atlases just work and do the job with no problems, I recommend them.
