I'm looking at taking a few portraits photos of the wife and was looking to get a wireless flash trigger now before i do am i correct in thinking it means i can fire myflash without the need of it being attached to the camera with a wire?

Sorry I'm a Nikon
But I got the yongnuo rf-602 for mine for £30 and work superb, they may be compatible with your canon, bought them off flea bay. Search on, here for them.

We recently had to do the same, got the Mrs a 430EX ii for her Canon 600D. It works well.

Or the more recent version - rf-603. The advantage of this is that the receivers and transmitters are the same (with rf-602 they are different)
