Wireless flash on a D40

I'm looking into getting a budget flash gun to fit my Nikon D40. After reading some review it's more than likely going to be the Nissin Di622.

I do a bit of vehicle photography and portraiture so was wondering how easy it would be to hook up a remote setup for the flash.

I know the D40 has no wireless commander, but is there some way of achieving "wirelessness" via a hotshoe transmitter/flash gun reciever?

Would something like this work?

I currently have a (very) oldskool flashgun of my father's, and it works from the D40 hotshoe just fine. would this also be the case with a wireless setup? :thinking:

If you want iTTL exposure control, and I have to say that it is bloody good, then you'll need a Nikon commander unit of some sort - a few options, but none of them cheap. Will work with the Nissin, but not with your dad's old unit.

If you don't want to spend too much then radio triggers are probably favourite, though some of the cheap ones are best avoided I think. Flash In The Pan sells good/cheap ones on here - see For Sale section. They will fire anything, but manual-only exposure control.

You should check the trigger voltage of older flash units. Modern DSLRs trigger using a very low voltage, older ones can use a very high voltage (250V+) which can apparently damage the electronics inside a modern DSLR...

Not sure I have actually heard of anyone frying their camera though :thinking:

:eek::eek::eek: that's not good. is there any way I can find that out before I use it again?
it does only run on 4xAA batteries.

Nowt to do with battery voltage. 2 AA batteries can give you 300 trigger volts

Even with old flashes that have high trigger voltages, I have yet to fry my camera. Try at your own risk though.
 
If you're worried about trigger voltage doing damage to the camera, just fire it via the remote.

Unfortunately the D40 doesnt have remote flash command :(
 
Looks like I will have to suply info to cure all these probs.Trouble is I am a duffer regardng a PC, links etc.

No, and your dad's old flash would not respond to it even if it did. You need a remote radio trigger, see post #2. Stick your dad's flash on that. Sorted :)
 
:thumbs: just right-click on the web address at the top of the browser and hit copy, then use the hyperlink button (globe+link) and right-click, paste.
 
I checked the flash I have, and it's apparently got a measured output of 194v! :eek: cheers for the heads-up guys!!!
