I have an old Sony A99. At the moment it uses a cable to download photos.

Are there any wireless options so that it could be used either with a smart phone or just the desktop via bluetooth? Modern bluetooth is so much faster than it used to be.

I wonder as I've just got a small digital camera which uses an app and it's so handy to be able to download photos anywhere rather than having to wait until I get home. That uses wireless and bluetooth.

The A99 has a usb2 connection so would just any old usb bluetooth dongle thing work? Has anyone used a bluetooth dongle to download photos instead of a normal cable? I am not so keen on wireless ones as they tend to have unsecured wireless while they're on. Bluetooth at least offers pairing which is a bit more secure. I did have wireless on an older Fuji camera and it was useless. Never worked. Just plugged it in instead which defeated the point of it.

This TP Link bluetooth one is a possibility?

A generic bluetooth dongle wouldn't work with the camera because the camera itself wouldn't understand what it is, nor how to connect to Sony's remote app. Looks like it can be cable tethered though;

I surmise on the basis of the linked products specs that it is not suitable for the purpose you describe.
Why, well it requires a driver to function and that driver is natively present in Windows 8, 10 & 11 but needs a download to work with W7

I very much doubt that a driver (in camera firmware?) exists for Sony or any other cameras.

Normally when I plug in the usb it sets up transfer mode. I was optimistically hoping that a bluetooth dongle would have been invented that just did data transfer to a receiving device without much need for anything else.

I have a lightening to usb cable thing that does similar so I thought it would be easier than it is.

The nearest I can get to your question is my Panasonic G9ii to which an SSD drive can be plugged into a port on the camera. Thus no need for a dongle

Above a 250GB SSD drive bigger ones will work as well

Interesting..,.....
Do you/can you record to it when shooting stills or video and if so do you also set the camera to 'write' to the SD card too?

Or do you use it to back up the SD card?

Newer Sonys use the Play Memories app, along with built in WiFi, to transfer images to phones/tablets but the older bodies didn’t.

Alternatively, you could use an SD to Lightning dongle and pull the memory card from the camera to transfer it direct to your phone while you’re out.

You can record stills or video to it . The camera menu has to be set to it, However he SD cards don't work while the SSD drive is being used. depending on length of say a video A larger SSD drive would be an advantage
this camera can also be set to one SD card slot to record stills and the other to record video so you have a choice.

It is that good I am thinking of selling my other G9 and getting a second G9ii

This is a small fraction of what the camera can do it blew my mind away. Here is another example of what it has designated tracking for

In animal the choice is either eye or body

That's just asking for the sd card to get sausage fingered into a puddle
