Grateful for some help on this problem.

We had an electrical storm last night. One lightning bolt was so close we could hear it - a sudden crackling sound followed almost immediately by some window shaking thunder. I logged off the PC and unplugged it but left the router plugged in.

This morning the router (BT Hub 3) looked OK, all the lights were on and blue which indicates everything is fine. Wireless devices connect to the router and work fine but the wired connection to the PC does not.

The troubleshooting on the PC says the Ethernet cable is unplugged or it is broken. I've swapped the cable with a spare and changed the filter too but no joy. Is it possible/likely the storm fried the network card in the PC but left everything else untouched? Grateful for any ideas.

Thanks

Dave

very well could have cooked the network card, have you tried another port on your router to check the port is working?

can you plug something else directly into the router to check the ports are working ok.

Thanks for the quick reply, Paul. Unfortunately I don't have any other device that I can connect to the router with an Ethernet cable. Think as stopgap I'll get a wireless dongle to plug into a USB socket.

Any laptops they often also have ethernet ports

Unfortunately not. Other than the PC the only devices are couple of smartphones and a couple of Kindles; and the nearest dongle is around 75 miles away!

Cheers

Were your PC and router plugged into a surge protector (including the phone line connection)? If so, and the router has died due to the lightning strike then you might be able to claim off the surge protector manufacturer for the cost of a replacement as some of them offer an insured warranty for surge and lightning protection. If you weren't using a surge protector on your kit then you might want to look into the possible benefits of getting a good one?

Did the network connection fail as soon as the lightning hit? Or did it continue to work up to the point of shutting down?

If the latter I'd suggest possible coincidence. Try uninstalling the network card in device manager and let windows reinstall after a reboot.

No surge protector. I don't know when it failed. I've just tried uninstalling the card but still no joy, but thanks for the suggestion.

new router please I guess

Worth getting a new network card, they are pretty cheap (under £10).
