Yes
sorry to sound dumb, but what is it? do you light the wire wool so it glows red hot??? what type of wire wool is used etc?

Confess I didn't know what you were talking about until I put "wire wool spinning" into Google (other search engines are available). Does that not answer your question ?

Right what you need is some wirewool/steel wool B&Q is your friend, it can can be had at a reasonable price from there decorating department

Now you need something to hold the wirewool, there are a number of options, some use bull dog clips, some use a whisk personally I like metal bird feeders

now you need some rope/chain to spin the cage once it's on fire

Finally light it and spin like mad

I hope that helps

I use a small whisk to stuff the wool into. Don't pack it too tight and use medium grade wool. Oh - and if you're as bald as me (or even if you're not) a hat is essential. Preferably one that won't burn when sparks land on it :-)

Never thought of using a bird feeder - think I'll give that a go!

B&Q do a very nice little Metal one in the shape of an apple, and it works very well

I had my first ever go at this the other night, I did not get my settings right but quickly run out of wire wool. It does not last long lol.

These were the best 2 of my poor attempt...

I know this maybe a real nubie question but how can I get the focus right on my own in the dark?

That can be very difficult when your on your own :( but my suggestion would be to pick out where your going to position yourself and then use a torch to shine there and this should allow you to achieve auto focus then switch to manual  and you should be good to go, I'd also be looking at f/8-16ish so that will broaden your DoF a reasonable amount and make your life easier

Lol can you imagine explaining an injury at your local a and e

"So patient numbnutz youI fused your little finger to your middle finger by swinging a bird feeder full of ignited molten wire around your head really quickly in the pitch black in the middle of no where....."

Hmmm :)

I have to admit the photo's look very cool, but is there not a danger of setting fire to everything?! I would love to give it a go, I might have to find the right spot!

Do you soak the wire wool in something flammable?

no , and no need - steel wool is flamable anyway (its to do with the surface area encouraging the iron to oxidise)

incidentally on the injury front i'd strongly suggest that the person doing the spinning wear long sleeves, gloves, a hat , and some form of eye protection.

Also its not a great idea to do it somewhere where theres lots of flamable stuff arround (no cornfields for prefference) areas covered in concrete/tarmac etc are favourite , or over water, or on beaches

put your rucksack where you are going to be standing - focus on it then turn the focus to manual (or set focus lock, or back button focus), and set a decent apperture so you've got lots of dof

Something else for me to try.

I cant wait to try this, but I dont think I'll be doing it on my own the first time.
As well as wearing protective gear, consider protection for the camera etc. Ive just been reading this article
