I was out the other day with my camera and I was frozen! I had on: long sleeved thermal vest, cotton poloneck, thickish fleece, waterproof jacket; tights, leggings and jeans; socks and shoes. Since then I have invested in a pair of lined trousers and a more waterproof jacket. But what about the rest of me - can anyone suggest more robust thermal underwear? Suitable for a girl of course!

Hi,

I often wear SKINS clothing, for Sport its basically worn as the name would suggest next to the Skin and is based on the compression type clothing primarily used to keep the Muscles warm, make sure you get the COLD version for obvious reasons.

As an additional layer i always wear a Buffalo Mountain Shirt, they are fantastic bits of kit and still retain warmth when they are soaking wet through.

Hope this helps.

I know it's not cheap, but I have heated clothing from Exo which I use on my motorbike, but also when out in the winter with a battery pack.

You get about an hour from the battery pack, but you don't need to have it on all the time, just when you start to feel the chill.

I've got one of these waistcoats that warm all over the body

they do a cheaper version that just warms the back/lower kidneys only. Mine allows me to choose all over warmth or just the back panels (for longer battery life).

Really handy when I used to shoot football/rugby in the winter

There was a really good thread on this a few weeks back, with lots of good recommendations, probably worth a search.

People's physiology varies a lot, and so does their tolerance to heat/cold. I'm not very temperature sensitive and can handle very hot and pretty cold weather without much difficulty - providing it's not cold, wet and windy at the same time - but my wife feels the cold badly. She dresses much the same way as you do, without the jacket, indoors with the central heating on and still complains!

Good outdoor gear - Paramo is excellent, but expensive and too warm for some people - and the right layers should help, but it also depends on whether you're sitting still or active, when and what you last ate, and if you're perspiring. I think you'll just have to experiment.

I'm still amazed by the number of people I see walking around in a T shirt and jeans (or even shorts) around here on days when I'm layered up. They just don't seem to feel the cold at all. Mind you, some of the 20 stone monsters are carrying so such much blubber that they could probably curl up in a snow hole without any discomfort!
