Hi all,

I am after a bit of advice on shooting winter sports. I am going snowboarding in the new year and want to capture some decent action shots.
Can anyone offer advice on WB setting and what lenses to use, i am thinking of getting a sigma 10-20mm to add to my collection.

any advice welcome

James

Would also like to know this as I'm going boarding in March. I already have a Burton Zoom backpack and hope to be taking most of the photos with the nifty fifty. Is a cir-polarising filter essential?

Hi, I am not sure that would be the right choice of lens for sports photography? great for landscapes. I would go for bigger focal length zoom, maybe 70-200 or bigger. As far as white balance is concerned I use the cloudy setting which seems to work OK. If you are shooting in RAW you can alter this post shot if necessary. Always meter off of the snow and under expose by one stop. Snow tends to trick the meter a bit so be carefull not to blow out your highlights. Hope this helps......Ian:thumbs:

Thanks Ian, that helps alot. I had heard that it can be tricky with the light coming off the snow, so i will give your advice a whirl.
As for the lenses, i have a 70-200 that i will be using, but i was thinking of the 10-20 so i could get some different effects using the wide angle.

Seeing as your boarding you'll have plenty of time to take action pic's whilist parked on your backside of the skiers shooting past ;). Hang out at the snowparks for the best posers getting airs/riding fakie and doing flips etc. Go up to the kids (most of them are and ask if you can take their pictures) and then place yourself on the edge of the 1/2 pipe, ramp or rail and get snapping. Look out for snow kiters too ... they pull some sick moves!

I'm a complete newbie to photography so take my advice with a pinch of salt, but I would have though a ND filter would be wise, plus try and shoot on clear days if you want crisp landscape ... overcast days produce flat light and the foreground/background will have very little definition.

Now Now!! Spoken like a true skier!!

Thanks for the advice. I will definately be off to the park, deperately trying not to break my neck on some kickers and rails!!!

I will look into the ND filter

For a snowscape one stop compensation will probably not be enough. So I would bracket: +/- 0EV, -1EV, -2EV.
And shoot RAW.
