Yes
Ive recently been handed a bottle of wine from my late grandfathers cellar. Ive recently moved into a new property so the bottle was given to me to sell and use the funds towards works on the house.

My question is: WHERE do i sell this???

Does anyone know of anywhere it can be sold to???

Ive only got one bottle of it, but it is expensive and is in absolutely pristine condition.

God knows, I do know that there are wine auctions but not sure who holds them :(

But come one you cannot be tight with the info, what you got? You never know you might find a buyer on here  there are a few drunkards on here

Yeah, ive noticed afew online auctions but i'd have to check up on the site reviews before using them to sell something like this.

Its a 2009 75CL Petrus Pomerol

Pity you haven't a case of six. With just one, you may as well try selling it on egay.

If it were me, I'd hang on to it for about a decade. It will be worth much more then - although I suspect I'd drink it before then.

You should clear two grand with this and may be a little more. Hang on.

According to the internet......From Feb this year, they stopped you from selling alcohol on Egay

Nope me neither!!

That wine was only released a year ago (September 2012), and due to its structure, it is not supposed to be drunk for quite a while yet.
As it is one of the most presigious/iconic wines in the World it will probably go up in value, particularly as the Chinese are now investing heavily in top wines from Bordeaux and Burgundy in particular.

It belongs in a cellar buddy. We've got a few and even that gem 'chateau Lafitte' - if that's how it's spelt. The more expensive the wine, the worse it tastes!

Unfortunately ive not got a cellar myself mate, so a quick sale is probably best.....its just finding a buyer.

You need to get in touch with the waitrose wine club from what I can remember, they could point you in the right direction :)

Waste of time unless you have a case.
Single bottles are for drinking, though this is too young by a long way.
(I was in the wine trade for 25 years)

Cheers for the info. Do you have any idea of anywhere that may take it off my hands?

Tasting notes:

It reckons 2014 to 2070 for drinking, though 15 years from bottling would be best.
Looks like 2009 was one of the best vintages ever.
(I've been out of the trade for over ten years, just drink it now!)

It's very difficult to sell a single bottle. Buyers tend to want cases from dealers who have stored it correctly.
Can you ensure (and prove) to a buyer that it has been stored in controlled conditions? Temp, humidity, light?

It may be worth getting in touch with some of the sellers on the site I posted to see what they say, but realistically I wouldn't hold out much hope. Sorry.

Lol, just speaking from experience Andy :) Although there are some fab wines out there, I just never came across many that suited my pallett!

Thanks for all of the comments guys. Ive emailed afew companies and just MAY have someone interested in it.....just waiting on their offer.

Do you know if anyone else benefited from Grandfather's gift? If a few of you all got bottles, you may have a case between you.

Unfortunately it was the only bottle found. I have actually had a £1650 offer for it.

I've seen this vintage offered at £2000 - or the $USD equivalent - and more by wine merchants, so that might be reasonable for a single bottle and a private sale. Bit out of my league, I'm afraid!

You have to put your self in the buyer's boots.
It's a hell of a risk paying that much for a bottle of wine that may or may not be up to scratch. As I said before, can you guarantee how it was stored?

The price offered seems pretty fair.
Good luck :)

They don't sell that in Morrisons...

Does anyone actually drink wine at that price? Other than posy city boys? Won't whoever buys it be doing so as an investment?

Usually, yes, but some people do drink wines at this price level. It's an open argument about whether they're really worth it. Good wines don't improve in bottle indefinitely, even with optimal storage, and eventually they deteriorate. Investing seems to be about faith, that the 'value' will continue to appreciate, and there will always be someone prepared to pay even more for it when you want to sell. Some very old wines - and cognacs - fetch mind bogging prices even when they're long past their best, and may be practically undrinkable, just because their rarity appeals to collectors.

Take the offer! While it might possibly be worth more, it may not be so a grand an a half (plus a little bit!) in the hand is worth 2 grand in the ether. Something's value is eventually what someone's willing to pay and while someone may well have paid 2 grand for a similar bottle from a dealer/merchant, your offer is to you. a random who's flogging a bottle of posh plonk! Oh, and our trans pond cousins will pay extra so they can say they're serving a 2 grand bottle rather than a 1 grand bottle.

The big prices nowadays are In The Far East or Russia! :)

Personally I'd ask Berry Bros what they'd offer. They'll take on single bottles if its decent stuff.

Yeah, and the + £2000 offers I've seen are wine merchants selling prices. Their buying prices will always be lower, and a private sale might give you a better deal.

Cheers for all the comments and help guys. Just a quick update.....

I had another offer for the bottle. London City Bond came and collected it and took it to be conditioned. I have just received a nice £1700 payment into my account.

Drinks are on you at TP'14!!!
