Windy North West England : 12th Feb

I think I've been pretty lucky today! I'm learning to drive at the moment and was out earlier on the tops around Ilkley, it was windy and wet but didn't seem too crazy until I was back home in Bradford. I'm out to the west of the city in the hills and it's about as wild up here now as I can remember it ever being!

Friend of mine has had the external stairs to her flat blown over... Onto her car, writing it off. Fire Brigade can't do anything until everything is secure so she is stuck up there for the time being.

:(

Blackpool here. We're being battered mercilessly. Highest gust recorded locally 101MPH at a local weather station located at the airport. I'm 1 mile from the coast and the house is making some weird noises... deep sub-bass rumbles, and when there's a large gust, you feel the pressure change.. it's actually quite scary. Fence panels down... bits of cement in the back garden, so probably ridge tile pointing problems. Coaxial cable ripped from TV antenna. Recycling bin missing, presumed dead... 4 more hours of this to go as well apparently. Driving home tonight was interesting. Had to drive around fallen branches a plenty going past the park.. heard several hit the roof of the car. Several phone cables down and whipping around dangerously.

It's not good here.

I bought a new thermal balaclava.. I look like the local rapist.. but keeps ya neck and ears warm :)

Not in the NW but down in Somerset we are picking up loads of flying debris. Living on top of a hill flooding not a problem. If we were to be underwater then pretty much everyone South of Brum would be gone as well as Bristol and Bath.

Hailstones in v high wind 2 hours ago gave a strange glow to the road outside but deadly to have been in!

If anyone knows Caswell Bay outside Swansea on the Gower and remembers the little cafe there? Well just got a text to say that this evening's storm along the SW coast of Wales has basically destroyed what was left after the earlier storms..... The Casweel Bay webcam is apparengly showing a pic that is the last before failing and not expected to be back in operation for 6 weeks!

Truly some really foul weather and to all in the NW hope all stay safe. One of my fave places to visit.

Now off the tie down my summer house.... it's attempting to fly apparently.

Its bloody horrible in the SW as well - but we're used to it now , we just batten down the hatches on the tractor doors and stay in drinking cider , or something. Its been doing this on a weekly basis since xmas so its nothing new. a large chunk of the barn roof blew off earlier there's about a foot of water running across the road, we've spent the GNP of a small latin American country on clearing up trees and more are blowing down, and most of the beach has disappeared. Situation Normal.

Hope everyone is staying safe where ever you are.

Look on the bright side Pete, free firewood.

True - about 55 trees worth so far - some of them are so big I may get a wood mizer in once the storms stop as it seems a shame to put them into log rounds

Was down in Burnham late last week when the Bristol Channel was in full force and the Severn reach all in a mess.

Apart from the rain the front was calm(ish). Nipped down to Bridgewater, full scale storm, back to Highbridge and across the M5 for the run dpwn to Street. From the high road view over the levels it was clear to see the absolute mess at that end of the levels.

Just heard that a 90+ man has been electrocuted in Calne in Wiltshire whilst trying to sort a fallen tree.

Sad but predictable -if you've got a fallen tree for Christ sake leave it to the proffesionals , particularly if there are power lines involved. Saying that I had to send a tree surgery team off site for their own safety earlier , they were in the middle of clearing one fallen Chestnut when another one blew down and only just missed them . I said no , I think we'll wait til it stops before we get anyone killed

According to the shipping forecast it was gusting 105 mph in the Lundy area earlier - We clocked 85 mph then the anemometer blew off the roof

I`ve got a big old ash to cut up when I can get on the land and when it stops blowing the powerlines about, the b****r dropped right next to a pylon.

Keep the fire going next winter though.

yep - sad , but essentially a victim of his own stupidity - if a tree brings down a powerline don't touch the flipping thing - call the power company and their dedicated tree surgery teams will deal. We had a holly blow over into power cables last week - called western power and they were on site dealing with it within 20 minutes

He won't be the only one - tree surgery is dangerous (power lines or not) so people who don't know what they are doing should leave them the hell alone - I was disgusted to see our local B&Q promoting cheap chainsaws as a 'storm clearance special' the other day - deeply irresponsible (they call hung up trees widow makers, for a reason)

to be fair when I had words with the manager about it he took the signs down

Thunder & lightning here now. I wasn't expecting that.

very very frightening, Galileo Galileo Figaro....

Well.. I'm still here, and so is my house. Apart from that brief blip of around 100MPH last night, it seems the average gust speed was around 68mph.. so not as bad as most were expecting.

Still got no idea where my recycle bin is though :)

Got battered to hell last night on the coast near Llandudno....stuff flying everywhere. My neighbours 8ft shed was nearly over my 6ft fence twice and talk about panicking....the thought of an airborne shed going through my patio doors was frightening. Apart from a front garden fence panel and some uprooted plants not done to bad....not an experience I want to face again!

Still no power here absolutely NUTS!!!yesterday with the winds, cottage is fine thank god, couple of trees down away from our cottage and thankfully there is none overhanging us also a stone wall collapsed out on our lane, keep safe all.
Kevin.

Snow and wind in the night brought some power lines down, just been reconnected, full marks to powergrid, the phone lines also damaged, I have no phone but the broadband still works (only needs one of the two wires apparently), and there was no mobile phone service here until an hour ago.

My local paper (east lancashire) has just asked me if available friday afternoon as snow forecast in the area 2pm to midnight and they will req some snowey pics from the area..... doesnt sound good eh:(

Recycle bin update: I now have 2! Someone returned mine.. and then someone else did... LOL. It must have been from a different street but same door number. How far away from home must it have been??

We're collecting the things as they wash down the river at work - currently we've got four - I think we'll return them to the council when all this dies down

btw if any body missed it on Wednesday fear not theres a rerun due tomorrow night - The less than perfect storm part deux (well part Cinq in fact)

First time in 8 years the dogs refused a walk so that shows how bad it was!

Mine refuse to go out in the garden if the weathers bad

You wouldn't think dogs could speak but you can see f*** that on their faces when I open the door

You wouldn't think dogs could speak but you can see That'sForNaughtyPeople!! that on their faces when I open the door

I get the hard stare as Benji gets to the cat flap and peers through at the evil weather outside!

It is NOT my fault that it is raining again.

Honest. :D

We've lost our 40 foot Eucalyptus tree. A bow fell a few weeks ago, followed by a few branches, then last week the other bow went. Lucky it didnt hit out house or the neigbours. I had to fell the remainder to make sure it did do any more damage. Our entire boundry fence is down, and Ive just seen next doors wheelie bin making an escape down the road.
A few roof tiles are in the front garden, but I cant see where they are from, our roof looks ok. Neghbours fence is down too.

Im worried about the Syccamore tree at the end of the garden. If that goes we are in a world of poo.

Marines are down the road sandbagging properties. Thankfully my house is safe from flooding at least.

I had a near miss here in Rochdale. And that tree doesn't even belong to me!

By jove that's a near miss!

I expected to see lots of downed trees around here, but nothing. There were bits of branches and stuff on the roads, but that was it.
