Hi I'm hoping someone may be able to advise me on how i can get my computer to start up on the first attempt instead of having to switch off and on a few times.

3-4 weeks ago my computer started to give me a black screen after it had loaded the BIOS etc, it would get to the stage where it says"Starting Windows" and give me an image of little incremental green squares, but after that not get any further. If i hold the power button down to switch the computer off and restart it some times it boots up fine sometimes i get the same again, so i have to keep switching off and on until it boots up. It starts fine in safe mode every time, and i think it started after a Windows update but i couldn't be certain.

So my question is how do i identify what the problem is, could it be graphics card related? and how do i go a bout fixing it short of doing a clean install? My computer knowledge is better than basic, but I'm by no means an expert.

Thanks

Kev

If its fine in safemode its usually driver related. Do you let windows update install new drivers?

Id be included to suggest downloading fresh drivers from manufacture websites.

Thanks Neil,

I let windows suggest new drivers and usually always install them, I've just looked on the ATI website and found that there is an updated graphics driver available, which I'm downloading now. I'll install that and see how it goes.

if you boot up in to safe mode, got to system tools and do a system restore, go back to a date that you know that the machine was 100% fully functioning and see how you get on from there, need any more help pm me.

I'm not sure when it started exactly, as i'd already thought of that one. It happened a couple of times then stopped and has been more persistent recently.

I installed the most up to date driver for my graphics card yesterday, but that hasn't solved the problem:'( I have the Boot Log but it's massive so didn't want to post it here it case it took up too much room, here's a snap shot of when my drivers stop loading upto my graphics card.

I hope it makes sense to someone as it doesn't mean much to me.

or you could do it via this thread so that anyone having similar issues can read it.. ;)

not to worry, im more than happy with it if its ok with mods, on previous forums that im memebers of they complain about clogging up the thread with posts

thats from booting into normal rather than safe mode isnt it?

it may be worth trying the system restore as mentioned above, or press F8 at boot and try "last known good config" sometimes that works.

Hi Neil G yes that is a boot in to normal, should i do the same in to safe mode to see what the differences are?

System restore is a good idea :) Startup repair might also be worth a try.

Last known good config won't work as you've already booted into normal mode after the problem occurred.

technically last known good boots from the settings at last good shutdown so if it hasnt loaded windows since the issue it might still work. its something to try at least, stranger things have happened

What is Last Known Good Configuration?

It's a Windows startup option that uses the most recent system settings that worked correctly. Every time you turn your computer off and Windows shuts down successfully, important system settings are saved in the registry. You can use those settings to start your computer if a problem occurs. For example, if a new driver for your video card is causing problems, or an incorrect registry setting is preventing Windows from starting correctly, you can restart your computer using Last Known Good Configuration.

Yeah, I assumed it was fine shutting down when he managed to boot, but it might have worked out there was an error and dumped the config.

The windows RE tools have got quite good now, so I would go through them before trying something more complex in safe mode. I'm a huge fan of Startup repair

Thanks for the advice everyone,

I've previously tried last known good configuration and that some times works, sometimes it doesn't. I've just tried running the start up repair function from my Vista Disk, but that gave me a message about disconnecting a recently connected digital music player or digital camera, so that didn't work. regarding system restore, I'm not certain of when the problem started, so i would be reluctant to do that.

Does any one have any other ideas?

Thanks

Kev

Hi, this could be caused by quite a few things so it's hard to say exactly.

Can you only enter the Windows Recovery Environment from your disc? Or do you have it built into your computer?

When you tried Startup Repair, did you have anything attached to the computer at the time? What message did it give you? Startup repair should be able to continue with attached devices.

I would suggest trying Startup Repair again, but first unplugging all USB devices, and any other device/sd card attached.

Thanks Someguy,

I disconnected everything bar my mouse, and keyboard, which are connected via USB, made sure there were no memory cards inserted and ran the start up repair again, only to get the same message. As far as i am aware i can only access startup repair from the disc.

Ok, I would be tempted to try and get Startup Repair working.

However, first I would still suggest trying System Restore to a much earlier time, backup any program data you want and can't just reinstall. If that doesn't work, it's probably just easiest to reinstall, although there are some other things you can try. If it's a driver problem, this should solve it.

If not, one of your devices installed on the computer seems to be blocking Startup Repair. You can try opening Device Manager and disabling any non-essential devices, and then try Startup Repair again. (Make sure to re-enable any devices afterwards).

Another route to try, System File Checker in case it's a system problem:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833/en-uk

Thanks for your help with this everyone, the problem is still persisting and i think if System file checker throws up any damaged files i would be comfortable changing things to repair them so it will be a clean install over the weekend.

Whilst I'm messing round with the computer I'll put a new processor in i, but my question is which one? I've narrowed it down to 2/3 either an Intel e6700 (£62) (the newer one running at 3.2Ghz), a e6800 (£69), or an e7500 (£87), so which one and why?

Thanks

Kev

Just finished running the System file checker and it repaired damaged files, so i may find that start up is fine now. However i still want a new CPU.

Hi, I'm curious as to whether SFC fixed the issue or not?

As for a new CPU, I would go for the fastest one your motherboard can support. Also make sure your PSU is powerful enough for an upgrade if there is a substantial difference.

The e7500 is the best one out of those three. Just make sure your pc can support it fine.

I've shut down and rebooted 3 times and it seems to have worked fine every time so it looks like the SFC has done the job for me, thanks Someguy.

Looking at processors, you said that the e7500 was the best of the bunch, and i realise that it's a core 2 duo not a Pentium dual core like the e6800 but looking at the bench mark scores here the e6800 scores better on all bar one of the test, am i right in thinking that there isn't much in it and as i won't be overclocking the E6700 could be a better option for me? As it's faster and £18 cheaper?

Thanks

Kev

What motherboard and memory do you have? The Pentium dual vs core 2 duo comes down to (from memory) bigger cache sizes on the C2D - the processors are near enough identical.

PS. If you can stretch a little further, for £250 on ebuyer, there's an AMD package which would be about 2.5x the processing power of anything you are suggesting here (assuming the PSU is capable of course :))

I've got a gigabyte GA-965P-S3 Mobo with 4gb of DDR2 5300 ram. As much as the AMD package would be very nice it's not something i can stretch to at present, i keep looking at the OC'd packages at SCAN and overclockers which is tempting.

for the rev 3.3 of that board:

Supports Intel® Core™2 Extreme Quad-Core / Core™2 Duo / Intel® Pentium® D processor
Supports 1333/1066/800/533 MHz FSB

chuck a quad core in it :D

im a fan of the Q9550, run one of those in my editing box along with 8Gb DDR2-800 and it handles LR2 and CS3.

i also run a Q8300 in another media box, its a cheaper alternative but not quite as pokey.

As much as i would love a quad core, i'm trying to this on a budget as my computer is probably getting towards the end of it's life (it's 4 years old now) and i'm trying to do it on a budget as it's not something that's needed, more wanted.

So which chip e6800 or e7500?

Thanks

Kev

Although it does mention the E6500

My mistake, the E6800 is the better one, I should have looked them up properly :D

Anyway, go for the best one you can support and afford.

Except the CPU list for that board DOESN'T mention the E6800 - see: http://www.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/cpu-support-popup.aspx?pid=2457 In which case, the E7500 ;)

I checked that and didn't see it listed there but all the other Wolfdale ones that had been released prior to the E6800 are listed and all the core 2 duo chips that are faster are supported, so I've taken a bit of a gamble and I'm hoping I'll be fine.

I'll let you know over the weekend.

Thanks again

Kev

Good luck :)

I managed to get the E6800 processor working, although i did have a slight panick when i first put it in and couldn't get to the BIOS screen, a quick change over to my old processor and an update of the BIOS accepted the new processor.

I now want to do a clean install and want to know the quickest/simplest way of doing it. I have my hard drive partitioned, with the C drive for windows duties, but somhow this seems to have managed to get up to 90 gb, D drive for Data and my E drive for programmes. My thought was that if i copied the prorgam files from Windows and then put these back in to the relevant folders it would save me a lot of time reinstalling programmes, is this correct, or am i really barking up the wrong tree? and if so what is the best way of getting a clean install and not taking an age to reinstall everything, everything is backed up using windows back up utility?

Thanks again

Kev

Good news on the processor upgrade :) You can't just copy apps - they need to be installed unfortunately. As you're doing a reinstall, I'd just bite the bullet and start from scratch. It's surprising how many programs you don't need ;)

I'm working today, so that's tomorrow sorted then

Got everything installed yesterday and it all seems to work fine. Just need to check it all over and make sure, I've not had chance to see how much quicker it is yet and I'm away from home with until tomorrow so I'll have to keep waiting.

Thanks everyone for their help and advice

Kev
