Hi,
I'm trying to install Windows SP2 for XP and it persistently fails.....anybody out there give me a pointer before the club hammer comes into use.:bang:
Any pointers gratefully received.

PS....replies suggesting the weight of the hammer will be logged for future retaliatory posts...got it:nono:

The service pack logs shows;

Failed at the first hurdle.....secedit is not recognised as an internal or external command.

Thanks CT...I'll have a look through that one.

Just discovered that the previous line of enquiry uses a routine called secedit that is not in XP home, only in XP pro.

I've spent half a day on this and getting thoroughly pee'd off with the whole thing.

Update....

Progressed further this time but fell over for the same reason on the next unaccessible registry entry. I'll just keep plodding through editing each one that fails.
Thanks for help...it's got me rolling again but don't go too far just yet.

I don't know your IT level so i will just jump in and you can then ask questions OK

Q1 have you backed everything up that is in the same physical disk as your OS? If not then do so now and do sp2 only after you have backed up all of your data, including your profile, favourites, email, network settings and isp details

(Q1 is reaaaaaaly important)

Q2 have you tried creating another user profile, add this profile to the adminstator group – log off of your current profile log onto the new profile and try again with the new profile? (This assumes that the problem is that your current profile with administrator rights is Fu£$ed – why waste time fixing it? – just create another un- fuc£$d one!)

You may want to know that I spend as much time earning money in photography as IT but I earn more in IT and I’m qualified to HNC level in IT, and have been working in the field for many years – please do not believe everything you read in IT forums and be really careful with mods to the registry

Ps I live in South Wales now but used to live in Abingdon
 
Hi,

I wouldn't class myself as an IT guru but I program PLC's, setup process automation etc for a living so not a novice.
I've got everything I need on USB drives and the only thing the machine's used for is personal data storage and photo editing type stuff...no email or such like and it never goes on-line...hence no previous need for the SP2 protection before.

I'll give your idea of creating another user a bash and get back to you.

Yes...I think so. It's a time consuming thing because it runs for about 20 minutes before it falls over. I edited the registry for the first entry that was blocked and went to the next one. When I restarted the PC the first entry had been changed back.....:bang:.
I've now setup another user as suggested by Snappysports and going onwards an upwards.

You're only checking so you know whether to take your camera in the morning aren't you?

It could be a while yet...I've taken the precaution of throwing another two logs on the fire in case the night gets longer.

Unfortunately it doesn't matter what user you are logged in as, the installer won't inherit high enough permissions to change the registry entries.

Did you turn on the verbose logging as described here:

Knowing the entries that it's failing on might give a clue to let you set permissions on chunks at a time and save a few hours of attempted installs.
 
Also, turn off any firewall (esp. zone alarm) and av for the duration of the install...

I half know where I'm heading now but it's just taking longer to reach the next registry entry that is locked.

ouch, I feel your pain, had a bad run with this pc myself earlier this week

I've got an idea for you: rather than muck about with it, if the user data is already safely elsewhere why not do a repair install of the original xp (keeps the applications & data OK, resets all the microsoft updates to original xp install and rebuilds the registry) and then you can apply sp2 over the top of the clean system?

note Repair Install is NOT the ASR option, you boot off the xp CD and it gives you the option on repairing any existing xp installations after you go past the ASR option.

can anybody confirm this route for a pre-sp2 version of xp?

if the data is safe then if it fails you can still reformat and reload from scratch, assuming you have got the key code?


I had to do a repair install of xp sp2 this week on this pc, bit simpler as its a sp2 installation anyway, actually went quite well except for

- ie7 (if you already have ie7 you should remove ie7 before repair as it has overwritten some of the ie6 files so the repair reinstalls ie6 but leaves the ie7 files and ie6 dont run right with ie7 files, details on MS knowledge base article 917964), after repair you get the aggravation of ie7 locking on the runonce website instead of your home page, easily cured by going to ie7 tools add-ons and disabling all non-microsoft addons then rerun ie7 go through the runonce website to setup ie7, then after its finished and rerun you re-enable all the add-ons and its sorted.

- automatic updates (the downloaded updates fail to install after repair, its because the repair uses an old update software with the wrong registry entry, details on MS Knowledge base 943144, just follow their instructions)

Half way through yesterday I was in the mode to reformat and re-install.....got the disc but can find the authentication code at the moment. Strange thing is...the install disc from Dell shows it to be SP2 but the installed version is SP1. I suspect the timing was just right to have them grab a pre-loaded hard drive from the previous version and packed it up with a disc set from SP2.

I'm getting further now....in total frustration I deleted the .AudioCD registry key. I would reset the permission as with the other problem entries but this one kept being changed back. I've gone from 30 mins/attempt to about 45 minutes....it's getting further through the process each time.

How old is your Dell?
Mine is just coming up to 2 years, and came already with SP2.

I also came with Dell PC recovery. This enables you to put the machine back to the day it came out of the box. Also no installation disks for XP. You make an instal disk from the PC recovery program.

PC recovery works. Had a major glitch 2 weeks after it booted for the first time ( yup windows update) and had to use it to sort things out. Did the update before loading software was fine.

I know it's no help but I do feel your pain. Been there (many times).. Almost makes you want to go to buy a Mac

It was new in Jan05.

It's now finally got through the troublesome registry editing phase and is clunking away doing a cleanup...looks promising this time.
I didn't really need SP2 except that CS3 won't run without it. Fine on my laptop but that's a later build and the company keep it upto date.

Now you have it sorted take an image/backup of the HDD so as to not have to go through this if you need to reformat ever.

Acronis True Image does the job nicely

Yes, I'll get around to that. The strange thing is that the installation disc delivered with the system is an SP2 disc but the system preloaded on the HDD was SP1. SP1's been fine until I needed SP2 to run CS3.....the machine never gets online so there was no security issue t worry about.

All running now and CS3 loaded up fine earlier today....got a real chance to ruin any shots that weren't quite so bad..

The easiest way to resolve Windows Update failures is to:

Start>Run>Services.msc

Stop Background Intelligent Transfer Service
Stop Windows Automatic Update Service

Start>Run>%systemroot%
Locate the folder named SoftwareDistribution, delete it.

Go back into services and start the two services you stopped earlier. Try running the updates again. The folder you deleted earlier will be automatically recreated.
