Hi

I have had my laptop for about a year and in that time it has run Windows updates automatically without issue (WIN7)

Since Tuesday the update that it tries to complete when I switch on the laptop "Fails to configure" and rolls back. These are the updates when I look in

Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update\Select updates to install

Should I just switch off the auto updates or is it worth trying to figure out what is going wrong (no idea how to do that bit :( )

Thanks

June

I had this problem recently. I ended up installing them manually one at a time.

I had this problem. I uploaded them manually, and was given a message that they were successful. Then they downloaded again, and again, and again. Whilst the install is successful for some reason the message back to Windows isn't working. It's a known problem with these uploads, and Microsoft don't know how to cure it.

I've been talking to one of the Microsoft help guys located in UK, and he can't fathom it out either. General consensus on the Microsoft forum was to switch off automatic updates. Most updates are only very minor, and missing them far outweighs the benefits from not having to constantly deal with these troublesome updates.

Please don't switch off updates, you could miss out on important security patches.

As mentioned above, search the kb numbers on the Microsoft site. Download and install manually.

If nothing else works then right click and hide them rather than turning the whole lot off.

Can't hide them, because they appear to have installed correctly. Then they re download themselves. if you know a way to stop them downloading I'd gladly turn back the updates, but at present they are a total PIA. At the last count these updates had "correctly" installed themselves nearly 50 times, and yet they were still always there waiting to be installed yet again.

I just pick and update manually every few months.

The ops haven't. Yours sounds like a different problem if they've disappeared from the list?

I remember coming across this issue not too long ago and decided to research it - it basically happens because Windows decides it can no longer be bothered updating the list it keeps to tell it which updates have been installed. So the ending result is the updates install, but windows then subsequently forgets it did the update and so goes to download it again. It is fixable (I think they might have a Fixit) but it's a pain in the arse and thankfully I've never personally had to see one of these cases through to the end. A lot of things like this end up at the same door - the one that says "re install" on it.

Thanks for that, I'm glad it's not me! Thgat scenario appears to be exactly what is happening. I've tried the Windows Fixit route, but to no effect.

hi all - thanks for all the advise above. I did mange to stop the loop of updates, manually did one of them and hid one other but have not switched updates off.

Thanks again
