Anyone use one? Any helpful hints as to which are the best VFM (or, more to the point, which to avoid!)

It would be on Orange and only 3g, ideally PAYG (most browsing will be done when in wifi range) and would ideally have a vaguely decent camera in it.

TIA.

Any reason for wanting a Windows phone? I tried a Nokia Lumia 520 after years of Android use and while the phone itself was fairly well made and had a decent camera the operating system was just not well supported with apps which I use often and those that were available were no where near as well developed as the Android ones.
I'd stick to Android personally.
How much are you looking to pay? Think the Nokia I had came to about £110 with a £10 top up included from Carphonewarehouse.

I have a Nokia lumia 820 and I think it's great costs me £20 a month to run I can do the same things as I can on my windows laptop and PC when it comes to paying bills general emailing online food shopping. I tend to use it more than I do my iPhone that I have.

I had the same problem when i had an Ativ S, great phone, excellent battery life nice screen quite liked the Windows live tiles (when they actually updated) but the whole app following is a long way behind android/ios. The Ativ S can be bought here for 180 euro's (around £165) and as far as i know is the only windows phone with removeable storage.

Have to say I like Windows phones. Ms arad85 has one and is really pleased with it. If there were a few more geeky apps (typically wifi signal strength related) I'd get one. It works and is nicely integrated.

My contracts run out and I need to decide if to keep my 4s on a cheap contract or go,with something else. iPhones seem to attract a huge cost compared to other phones, 3 seems like a cheaper contract for all phones.
Quite liked the idea of the new Nokia 1020 for the camera but have never had a windows phone. I think I need to go into a phone shop and play.

Those expensive apple adverts have to be paid for somehow

Thanks for all the input. I looked in the Orange shop today but it was full of teens wanting iPhone problems sorting... I want the WinPhone for more integration with document types etc (Win8 user) and familiarity (see previous parentheses!) Cost not really an issue as long as it does the job. I'd forgotten that MS had bought Nokia - used to like my old Nokias but went the BB route when I joined the 20th century and got a smartphone because my wife had one (now upgraded to a Q-10) so could guide me through the setting up etc!

I'm sure I could save a few quid buying on line but much prefer to be able to go into a shop and fondle before buying and also be able to go back in for advice etc if necessary!

I love Windows Phone to bits but the lack of apps does my head in, currently using Android and I'm probably going to move to a Nexus 5 as it appears to be good value for money.

The only phone I've had 'recently' which has held its value has been an iPhone, on that note you may want to considering buying a second hand model like the Lumia 920 because even though it was the flagship a year ago it's now practically half price but your needs should dictate the handset (do you want a big phone or a small phone etc).

Happy with the choice of apps (as a Win8 user, I know which I use!) so would want a Win8 capable one. A decent sized screen would be good but it does need to slip into a shirt pocket (in a case) since trouser pockets seem to cause insurance claims!

What's a decent screen size though? If you go for the smaller units you can get a 520 or 620, moving up it would then probably be a choice between the 820 or 920 (the 920 is pretty big and heavy for a mobile though).

On the bright side they're all reasonably cheap even when you buy new.

I'll have to have a play with them and see what I can see reasonably clearly! :D

Ended up with a Nokia Lumia 625 which is big enough for me to read and use the touch keyboard. A few quirks but that's to be expected on any new device, especially at my age!!! Only been connected for an hour or so so not loaded it with all my wanted apps. Yet...

Great choice, besides the resolution I think it handily beats out last years flagship Lumia.

I've no reason to upgrade my 920. Has all the apps I need, great camera. The relative size of app stores is becoming less of a factor by the day.

Bought a Nexus 7 2 recently and despite improvements, Windows Phone and iOS are still a far more pleasant OS to use than Android.

Enjoying it a lot! Keyboard is a bit small for my fat fingers but I'm managing not to make too many typos, although it does seem to keep autocorrecting when it feels like it! Quite handy in some cases since it does mean fewer keystrokes...
Also just bought a Surface tablet with a keyboard cover. Very handy and got a USB port - my biggest complaint against the iPad 2 my wife had. Came with Office preloaded so can use it for more serious things than just browsing and games!
