Hi all

I wonder if anyone can throw some light on this 'issue'

I have a some image folders with in excess of 1500 images.....these folders typically 'refresh' i.e. the path section in the top ribbon has the green progress bar to what I understand shows the progress of W10 indexing the files.

However, I have one folder that takes forever to complete the bar reaches the end and just keeps going with the hour glass showing.
Now, the oddity is that I had created a couple of subfolders and though when I view the folder & subfolders using FastRawViewer or indeed DxO Photolab they see the sub-folders and the contents but Win Explorer just does not show the sub-folders and their contents.

Edit ~ I can see the sub folders in the Win Explorer lefthand pane but the issue is that the righthand pane as described above will not show the sub-folders !

I ran SFC /SCANOW and that found some corrupt files that it repaired but the problem persists

Does anyone have any insights of the matter and how to resolve it ?

TIA :)

Doesn't answer your question, but I have noticed strange behaviours lately, like a file you have just saved not showing in the folder, even after refreshing, but if you search for it, it is there, and as you, the green bar taking for ever.

I have seen similar to this on customers computers.. The slow green bar is usually indicative of some corruption in the security, ownership or permissions for the folder. Windows is very fussy in this area, 3rd party programs tend not to be and just read them anyway.
I would not suggest modifying the security of the folders, or the registry, manually ( for this issue).. There lies madness.

I would suggest copying the folders to an external drive. Check they are ok on that. Then delete the folders from windows, including the recycle bin.. Restart the pc. Then copy the folders back to the pc. This will re register them with new settings.

Thank you, I will try that and report back :)

Hi Brian

OK I have done as you suggested and copied it to both an external drive and my other internal drive.
Once copied Win Explorer shows the 'missing' sub folders.
However, once copied back to the original drive it does not show those sub folders

As mentioned, so far as know, it is only that one folder that has the issue. I have never that I recall made any changes to the drive settings and/or permissions.
It shows as error free and 0% fragmented.
NB it is included is my AV scans and is clear. This is used purely image storage.

Sorry I missed your post....

I am glad I am not the only one that has seen odd Win Explorer behaviour :headbang:

It was only the sub folders that I meant should be removed and replaced, sorry if I didnt make that clear. Moving the main folder will also remove and replace the (possibly corrupted) settings for the sub folders.
They need removing from the host folder and replacing afresh.

Is your 2nd pc hard drive an actual or virtual hard drive?

Ah! I also should be been clearer....
The structure is Year/Place/Species/Sub folder(s)

What I did by my understanding of what you advised was to remove the species level folder.

Edit:-
Well, an update......now bearing in mind that as mentioned I could see the sub folder in the LHD Win Exp pane but not the RHD one.
I deleted it via the LHD pane and rebooted etc
Copied across the visible copy from the second data drive
Closed and re-opened Win Exp and lo & behold there the folder was NB rather than wait for the green bar complete I stopped it as I could already see the sib folder was present.

It does look like normal service has been resumed :D

Both drive are separate physical drives.

I would repeat it again . Take off the species level folder. When on the external drive, remove the sub folders. Put species back on pc, then put the sub folders back into species folder.

Such are the idiocyncrasies of owning computers

Over the decades I have learnt and put into practice many things but as they say 'every day is school day' and thanks to you I have learned something new today...............I will just to try to remember it should I suffer from the same issue again in future.

Many thanks for your insights and help (y) :jaffa: :jaffa: :jaffa:
