Hi all, following my mac vs pc post I got a new laptop (Sony) and customised it, more ram, better graphics card etc.

So now it does photo things that I need it to do quickly etc, but I can't fathom anything out with windows 8.

Things that should be ridiculously easy like adjusting the screen so flesh hasn't got a green tinge seem nigh on impossible, setting up a pop3 email (outside of hotmail), why it appears to need me to sign into windows/hotmail for me to check an independent email (outlook or windows mail) god only knows. it seems everything I try to do I go round the houses and end up back where I started with getting anywhere, I feel like I'm wasting days here trying.

Not sure I've explained my problems the best way but I'm a user not a expert so go easy.

Are there any 8 users on here that can advise anything at all?

For colour management:
Type into the start menu "Colour management" and select settings, then select colour management. You can then set your profiles up or select advanced then select calibrate display.

For email, I don't think the built in mail client works with POP3. You'll need to use another client, like microsoft office outlook, thunderbird etc.

Are you using a calibration tool to calibrate it or just trying to do it manually?

Just manually at the moment.. I think I'll need to use something on it though if current efforts are anything to go by.

I can't fathom out what should be the simplest of things on it either though.. Silly things like it logs me out of fb and twitter every time I close explorer even though the keep me logged in is ticked.

I can safely say I hate Windows 8 with a vengeance!

The tint is a hardware issue, it's quite difficult to calibrate any monitor properly without a proper tool.

The browser issue, I can only assume it's for some reason set to delete cookies when you close IE. Check your settings, in IE click on the settings button just below the close button, select Internet options, select Privacy and see what settings you have.

Personally though I'd recommend you use a different web browser anyway.

Use Google Chrome instead of IE

Have you got a Microsoft account? To access the store and some other features you need a Microsoft account. Create one, don't use it for email, but once you have created the account it and linked it to Windows, it makes Windows a lot happier. It is just like your Google account on Android or Apple ID on iOS/OSX.

Why are you using POP3? It is better to use IMAP as the emails stay somewhere safe on the cloud and aren't PC dependant.

Then download start8 and turn it into windows 7

This ^

I bought a new laptop myself with windows 8 on it and spent my first hours getting it to work like Win7, fairly happy now but the stupid pop out from the edge icon bars still annoy me. I've not done anything to try and get rid of them as yet.

Start8 was the best $5 I've ever spent :)

I'll have a look.

Honestly don't know, not really up on this, always used pop3 though as a web guy set it up for me years ago so guess just gone with that, always open to change though, what is it?

Yeah i'll have to get one, just always been lucky in the past I guess with having monitors that look good and carry that through to print straight out of the box.

POP3 means the emails download to that PC. If the PC dies, you lose the email. Once the email is on the PC, it can't be accessed anywhere else (without remote access). Some people setup their phones to use POP3 and their PC. They set their phones to not delete off the server when downloading. You end up with different emails on your phone and on your PC

IMAP is when all the email remains on the server. You can often use webmail to access your email, but you can also setup your phone and PC to use IMAP. They download copies of the email (so you can use offline). When you delete an email on your phone, it is deleted everywhere. It also means email sent from any device can be seen in the sent items on any device.

Don't avoid Windows 8.

It is the way Windows is going, you will have to get used to it. It doesn't take long and you do prefer many aspects of it. There are some quirks, but these will hopefully be sorted out when Windows Blue is released towards the end of the year.

I just want to be able to navigate my way around a pc again, i hate not being able to close a page the way i've been doing it for past 15 years, and find things in the places where it would make sense for them to be, i feel like they've broken something that was fixed just fine, i can't get my head around the oh lets just confuse everyone by completely changing the way an os works attitude. It's so frustratingly unnecessary. I thought long and hard about going to Mac, i really wish i had now.

Stick with pop 3, if your emails are important to you you can easily back up your mailbox, just as safe as some remote server and you control it.

IMAP allows you to access email from multiple devices and keep them all in sync.

Any questions on Windows 8, drop me a PM

To close a Metro app, drag to the bottom.

If you don't use metro apps, then the new UI just becomes a full screen start menu. You will find it quicker to hit the windows button to bring it up and type in part of the name of the software you want to use.

Think of how far phones have come in 15 years, think of how much we have learnt from UI. Microsoft has applied that to Windows and IMO it was needed and has improved Windows, you just need to adapt.

I had to search the internet to find out how to turn a windows 8 PC off. Why after all this time is it a good idea to loose the start button ?

I also had to search the internet to find "paint" which is much improved.

Windows + I is the quickest way to get to power. I hardly use it as my desktop goes to sleep on its and my laptop goes to sleep when you close the lid.

Windows + X is great for admin stuff :)

Well I got a Spyder4 today and calibrated the screen, and it still seems to have a green tinge in the flesh tones... Think a return authorisation is coming up very soon.

sounding like a good idea, probably a dud screen..

RE Win8, now I have been a mac user as my main machine since the Bondi and still a mac is my main machine but I decided to treat myself to a 14" touchscreen Ultrabook yesterday as my portable machine and I am pretty darn impressed, all you have to remember is to use the search box and its there.

the trackpad gestures are really impressive too, definitely on par with using my mac.

yes its different but you have to give it some time and you will be whizzing around the OS
