Windows 8.1

What will that do for me?

Got all the tools I need for next to nothing....Bizspark will give me the rest shortly.

I'll get the full info later, but you get full msdn and copies of all software for development and internal use.

Ah k..

I'm going to join the Bizspark programme....gives startups (or companies < 3 or 5 years old) the same for free if you're using Microsoft technologies :)

I have a (sadly lapsed) technet sub that has given me access to OS products to try out

No major problems really, only that it installed the Microsoft compatible drivers for my graphics card. A 5 minute job to install the manufacturer drivers.

I'm glad Microsoft did not bring back the start menu as launching programs is far easier without one.

USB 3.0 ports still not working :bang:

On the device manager, the USBs are described as Intel (R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller (Microsoft) and Intel (R) 7 series/C216 Chipset family USB Enhances Host Controller 1E2D and 1E26.

I have checked each to ensure the drivers are up to date. Any ideas please?

Cheers
Mark

My USB 3.0 ports work, but not at USB 3.0 speeds, but this was the same in W7 and W8. I've given up on getting them to work at USB 3.0 speeds.

Do you know what make/model motherboard you have and do you know what USB 3.0 chipset you have i.e. Asmedia, NEC/Renesas or Intel? Windows installs the Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller by default, but this driver may not work with your ports.

Knowing which chipset you have may help in providing a solution. Oh, did the USB 3.0 ports work before you upgraded to 8.1 and if so, at what speed?

Hi Cliff.

I think they worked when I originally bought my laptop with Windows 7 installed and I think I was only getting USB 2.0 speeds but they stopped as soon as I upgraded to 8 and then 8.1.

As for USB chipset, I'm not sure bug maybe someone would know if I said that the laptop is a Medion Akoya with i5 processor.

Thanks.

My USB 3 HDD dock is still working after 8.1 upgrade but how can I tell if it's working at USB3 speeds?

How quickly does it transfer a large (1Gbyte+) file. The copy dialogue has a speed estimate if you click the down arrow on it (or at least it does in Win7)

It took 2m:49.6s to copy a 10GB zip file to a WD 3.5" hard drive in the USB 3.0 dock.
The copy dialogue reported a speed of 57MB\s. This seems a bit slow.

That's faster than USB2... No idea if that's fast or not as I don't have any USB 3 storage devices here. In device manager (Control Panel->Device Manager), do you have any USB3 hubs/controllers? I have 2 - an Intel one and an Etron one.
