Hi all.

I have just updated windows 8 and was wondering whether the widespread USB 3.0 problem is now fixed and been addressed in Windows 8.1.

Thanks
Mark

PS. Not massively different to version 8.0 other than start button bottom left and updates and recovery feature on the right hand menu.

It took bloody long enough to install :(

Looking good so far

Yes it sure did take a bloody long time for me as well & I can't see anything exciting but I guess it may be the hidden stuff. I still use my 'Classic Shell' app to give me the start button & programme opening list.

Also I have an annoying message permanently on the bottom right of my screen & wondering how to get rid of it

1st step would be to check your Bios settings to see if the computer is in UEFI mode and Secure Boot is disabled.

just installed it and its all fine so far apart from the half assed start button, i want my applications in there! How do you get it to boot to the desktop instead of the start screen though?

Just as a small aside, does anybody know what will happen when the "Preview" ends?

Pete

oooo hadn't looked at that Neil. Will play with that :)

Just updated my laptop to 8.1 and today I have noticed that when I transfer a large file to a USB Drive it gets so fat (approx 60%) then stops

Anyone else had this problem... ??

I have tried two pen drives and both are the same, and I tried formating them

I heard that you need to re-install all your programs after the update. Is this right?

No - but I did a full back up to portable hard drive before I started.

Thanks. I may well give it a go, I left it over the weekend as I really couldn't be bothered with re-installing everything!!

Make sure you have plenty of time as mine took 1.5 hours or may have been a little longer so good luck

dont suppose there are any techs with 8.1 installed yet? i.e. any issues with things like SQL management studio and other admin tools?

got the full 8.1 from MSDN and debating whether to dual boot or just go for it.

Is it a vast improvement to Windows 8 ?

I have 8 on a laptop, and if it is not a vast improvement I must wonder if it is worth the hassle upgrading.

No I did not have to re-install ANY programs including photoshop but I did have to uninstall and re-install my USB drivers to get them to work right. When transferring files it would get about half way and stop

I have seen no difference to be honest, I use classic start menu which is still compatible with Win 8.1 so the new start button makes no difference and I see Win 8.1 still does not have tabbed browsing in windows explorer so I use clover for that (like I did before) and I had hoped they would enable the ability to rearrange files in folders by drag and drop but no that's not their either so I am struggling to see what the main difference are to be honest

Thanks, I think I shall stick with what I have

Rearrange files in folder by drag and drop? Alphabetical order, modified order?

Number of differences if you use Windows 8 on its own, a number of options as Neil pointed out, rearranging Tiles, the search function has changed, a few other bits

We haven't, we only keep Windows 8 for compatibility testing and no one has mustered the enthusiasm to upgrade the test machine.

We have 8.1 installed on a few devices (tech here). Killed a samsung laptop as some of the drivers weren't the latest. Restored updates drivers and updated and all good

You grab a file and drag it where you want it and the files are automatically renumbered to the new order. It was in an older version of windows, cannot remember which (XP I think) but Microsoft in their wisdom removed it

It renamed the files or you mean you can stick a file beginning with b in the middle of files beginning with t and it leaves it there?

8.1'ed my desktop and Surface Pro. No problems with VS, hyper-v etc.

Did an in place new install over the preview btw, rather than an upgrade over a plain 8 installation.

Only change for 8.1 needed was visual studio 2012 update 3 to make the windows phone emulator compatible with the new hyper-v.

Not major changes really, just makes working with 8.1 day to day a bit more pleasant.

I have actually just switched everything over from my various googly and other services in preparation for packing in my day job and making a go of my own business developing apps/consultancy etc. Was pretty amazed at the whole setup...hosted exchange, azure website, hosted free TFS, VS2012. Have a fully rigged up business set to go on my own domain within a couple of hours. Makes an amazing change after spending so long in investment banking IT provisioning bureaucracy haha

Good luck :)

Thanks :)

Tbh I'll be happy enough if I spend six months off reskilling on cutting edge technology and end up going back to work...but being in charge of my own destiny, cutting the code I want, with the tools I want, the way I want, and being answerable to no one but the app store download figures sounds great right now.

Pretty incredible looking at it, the barriers to entry getting software published have never been lower. I've been blown away with the services at my fingertips in the Azure management console. MS are virtually giving it away at the moment as well.

They are really trying to compete with PHP, MySQL etc. at the same level and show the benefits of scale-ability and where you can go with it without huge amounts of work.

Not quite...they are competing with Google App Engine and Amazon Web Services.

PHP/MySQL etc. is all fully supported on Microsoft Azure.

You are only using part of their free/ extremely cheap stuff.

Look at Microsoft action pack development something - £250 a year approx.
