Windows 7 Sharing of folders

Evening all,

Could anyone tell me, in fairly simple steps how to do the following.
I have 4 devices all on the same network, and all part of the same homegroup.

2 of the 4 devices are mine, the other 2 are other family members.

I want to be able to share various folders between my 2 devices, but not to the other 2 devices in the house.
How can I go about doing this?

I have tried doing the "share with - specific people" option, but when I type in the name of the device name it cant find anything - what am I doing wrong?

Are you sure you have the name of the device correct and is the device switched on? I have a massive problem trying to share music from my PC to my xbox and I worked out it was my AVG firewall causing the problem

Yup...

Win 7 (and all other windows versions AFAIK) don't have the concept of a "network" user until you are running a domain where everyone logs onto the network (you DON'T have this, nor can you set it up in a home environment).

The way to do what you want is to set up a dummy user with a password on the machine you are granting access from, set the access permissions correctly for that user for the share and then connect to the share using that user/password when you try to connect. I've not done it here (everyone can see every share) but you may well have to store a specific credential using the credential manager in the control panel to get it to stick and be transparent for the users you want to be able to "just" let connect.

Still one question, the bit I have highlighted in bold..
How do you do that? Would I need to make that same username/account on my laptop, and do it that way?

So like this:

PC - share folder - "Photo Import 2012" - specific people - username: Nick2 password: test1234

Laptop - create new user account - username: Nick1234 password test1234

And then the share will show up?

Very confused about all this, it seems overly complicated!

Also - I am having problems with the right-click share with homegroup (read/write) option - it doesnt seem to be actually doing anything.
I have to actually go to sharing under properties, click share this folder and then it works...does this sound right?

The account is specific to the machine that the share is on - so that is where you want to create the account.

If you do start>run> then enter;

\\thehostnameofthepctheshareison\

Replace the text with the hostname of the PC your share is on.
Does it come up with an explorer window, or do you get access denied?
 
Nope. On PC you're sharing, create an account for sharing:

User: ForShare, Password: Test

Share the "Photo Import 2012" folder so the user ForShare has full access control on the share.

on the laptop when asked for login details, enter "\\PC\ForShare" (where PC is tyhe name of your desktop where the share exists and without quotes) and the password Test and click the remember the credentials tickbox.

Basically, in a Windows Home network, each machine has its own user list. When you connect to the PC, you have to use an account that is local to the PC sharing to log into.

Hi mate,
Thank you for the reply... unfortunately still no luck!

I have done as you said, and all was going well until the very last bit - which I have highlighted in bold..
That never happens, basically I have shared the folder on my PC with a new user called ForShare...

I am logged onto my laptop as "Nick" - however, I cant "see" the folder on my PC to be able to log into it...if that makes sense? Other shared folders are visible, but these are visible to everyone on my homegroup.
How do I try to connect to that specific folder through my laptop?
 
Right click and share, under permissions make sure you select everyone not specific options, also make sure you are set to a home network...

Thats off the top of my head, so i'll do a proper write up when im home, you will have to change your access settings too so they do not require a user name and password to access the shared folder. :)

right click on folder you'd like to share -> properties -> sharing -> share

in the drop down box click everyone and make sure permissions are set to read/write



in-case you still have troubles, click on your network icon in your task bar in the bottom left of the screen then clikc change advanced sharing settings.

Make sure that the following are checked:
- Turn on file and printer sharing
- Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can read and write files in the public folders
- Turn OFF password protected sharing

see how you get on :)

On your laptop, click in the address bar of an Explorer session and enter \\PC\Photo Import 2012

and press return. It may not be visible, but you should still be able to browse to it. You might also be able to mount it (right click Computer in Explorer and Map network drive...) using different credentials (select the tick box which says use different credentials).
