Windows 7 - Memory

The OP is having a problem with svchost though, which will probably be being started by the services section.... but having said that he hasn't posted here for a couple of days - perhaps everything is back to normal.

Hi, sorry, no I tend to only use my home computer at the weekend so not tried the latest suggestion yet. (I work on a computer all day at work so the last thing I want to do when I get home is start working on a computer again! :gag:)

Hi all

attach another proc explorer sctreenshot. Maybe its Avast acessing the disk all the time every boot up? Can I stop it doing the full scan every time or anything?

Also checked disk space, Ive got 800Gb and only 100Gb is used.

Thanks again

Was it running slowly when you took that screenshot? You have 95% idle CPU - that should be relatively zippy.

Which modules do you have enabled in avast?

I could(can still) type quicker than a text box could keep up and Im not a quick typist!

<dimwit mod> Err, how do I check that?
Ive got the avast interfac up and tabs on the left are:

Scan computer
Real time shields
Additional protection
Maintenance
Market

Also click "settings" at the top, nothing about modules in the list

I would stop Avast doing a full scan every time you boot up - totally unecessary.

I would also consider updating the graphics drivers, or rolling back if you have done an upgrade recently. Text not catching up in a text box without high CPU usage could be problematic graphics drivers.

Do windows and icons appear to "drag" or snap around when moved, or do you ever see a peeling effect on screen?

Real Time Shields tab. Worth opening each of those - they'll show you if Avast is scanning anything.

it doesnt by default, unless its been changed
I havent changed it, too clueless to know how. I'll check it though just in case.

Ok I'll have a look.

Graphics drivers may be worth looking into perhaps although I expect the graphics are on board so I probably wont know what Im looking for.

Thanks all.

Opened real time shields, showed it was scanning. Went through every one and turned them all off. Disk still thrashing away and proc exp showing avastui.exe at the top of the I/0 read bytes list.
Perhaps a different virus scanner needed where I can set it not to scan the disk every time.

Just tried to do a print screen to show the Avast user interface but I cant get anything onto the clipboard for some reason. Anyway there isnt a "Scan now" that I can see in the options.

Under the file system shield tab there are 2 checkboxes, Scan documents when opening, and Scan files when writing. Both are ticked. There is also an expert settings button, that brings up 3 more checkboxes for scanning programs, scripts and dll's

Cheers. Could be the answer, but I dont have the OS disks, or want the hassle to be honest, oh well.

Clean isos of Win7 can be downloaded free online (legally-or at least from legitimate websites), then just use the product key that came with the computer to activate it. :)

The sooner MS restrict what vendors can put on their computers before they sell the better IMO. It may drive up the cost of consumer computers slightly but would massively help the image of Windows machines, especially cheap ones!

if this is on your computer , get rid . at 50% it starts to slow down , at this level its time to do some house keeping , it wont take as long as a drive thats 95% full.

Cheers Steve

You might be running an old version, might be worth checking for updates

Will do, thanks.

Do what? Sorry, don't really understand what you're saying. Whats at 50%? What 'level'? What wont take as long?

Theres nothing wrong with the drive, only 12.5% used.

If you've got a spare hard drive or feel like buying one for more storage I'd suggest using the download link in post #54 and doing a fresh install to the new drive. If it doesn't like your windows key then no harm done as you can just put back the original C: drive and be back where you were.

I'm fairly computer literate and I couldn't stop our Medion from thrashing away at the hard drive on the original OS install :)
