Windows 7 Home Premium stuck on startup

I got a new Dell AIO PC yesterday. All was good until it decided to install some updates and now won't boot. After the Dell startup screen it says resuming windows and then goes to the next screen, give me a mouse curser and just sits there.

I have tried hitting F8 all the way through upto this point but can't get into a boot menu. I also don't have any physical CD's etc to reload anything..

The only other thing I did was set the computer to auto logon with no password prompt before turning it off.

Any ideas?
 
had a similar thing on my brand new Advent after update installation..got to a blue screen where it said Windows has been stopped. It took 3-4 restarts before I could start my PC...any inputs?
 
Strangely enough I had this a few weeks ago after Windows downloaded some updates.

It took a complete (clean) re-install of Windows to solve it.

I've also had problems recently with the Windows installer when trying to install some programs - most recently yesterday with Serif PhotPlus X3 which I just bought.

And I had this problem a few months ago when tring to re-install PhotoPlus X2.

In both cases only a complete re-install of Windows solved the problem and installing them before running any updates.

And in the past I had a clash between one update and Zone Alarm which didn't allow me onto the 'Net until I disabled ZoneAlarm and downloaded a patch from their site.

Got mine changed from PC world last night. When he tested mine it was a Hardisk failure. Gone for an Acer this time. Shall see how long it lasts :-)

I had this with my new H.P lap top, also after installing updates. I just unpluged it from the mains, then took the battery out. Put battery back in, pluged it into the mains. And it was ok.:shrug:
 
got it going again, left it unplugged over night and it then started with a screen saying last good configuration .. But it just installed sp1 and also 14 other updates.. I have made a backup DVD now.. Stupid bloody thing..

To be honest it's probably best to instal sp1 then other updates after. It's a bit of a chunky update..
 
Chances are the 'repair disk' is on a seperate section of the hard drive available at the first boot screen.
It may have been a hardware initialisation hang, in which case if it happens again, unplug any external things, like flash drives, webcams, etc etc until it boots into windows and then reattach when windows is open.
 
Eh?

If Last Good Known Config fixed it, it was a registry corruption issue - probably caused by a failed update.
 
Not sure, I just assumed when they mentioned it that's what the pressed. - a large number of updates makes it more likely one of them will go wrong so I think it was probably a registry issue. I find startup repair fairly reliable if the computer is stuck in that stage, so I normally try it first.

I was mainly confused by the 'repair disk' comment in the previous post.
