Windows 7 - 64 bit or 32 bit?

There are no cons to running 64bit Win7 that I've found, it runs anything I can throw at it.
 
so far, no probs with win7 64 either, and I'm running the RC. not installing the proper version until after crimbob.

only problem I've had so far is PCmark06 or something, where I downloaded and installed the win encoder 64bit version but I think PCmark isn't geared for that.
and frankly...who cares.
I run office, web apps, steam games. etc...no probs so far

Not quite true.

I did two operations one very quickly after the other.

I can't remember what the first one was, but the last one was right clicking on the desktop to change some settings.

The machine froze, that was the end of Win7 64bit and nearly the end of a 500Gb SATA drive too!

Since then I have tried the Win7 32bit on another machine, it worked fine except it would not work on my big telly (out of range).

No amount of tweaking graphics settings would work.

Yet it worked fine on another newer telly and all my monitors.
 
To be honest as systems get faster and software advances, you are likely to start needing more than 3.5gb of RAM at some point in the future which means a 64 bit operating system. Might as wel take the plunge now to futureproof your system
 
About to upgrade from Vista 32 to 7 64. The only downside I read was that Firefox plugins are usually only 32 bit, so use that version. Other than than, as others say, 64 bit is the future.
 
The only reason to install a 32Bit OS would be cost saving.
All 32 bit apps will still run under the X86 process (the same as Vista).

One system freeze and you kybosh 64 :shrug:
That is nothing to do with any inherent bugs on Win7 64. Most likely RAM or a dodgy process, and I am not sure how this would have killed a HDD.
 
Ive been running Windows 7 64 for a few months now and have had no issues with any 32bit apps. Only problems ive ever had with 64bit was XP64 generally with drivers and a few programs.

I would definately go with 64bit install.
 
Go for the 64bit OS. The OS can then utilise over 3gb of RAM. Both Vista 64bit and Windows 7 64bit have had had no problems running 32bit software for me.

Kept getting an error message with Partition Magic when I tried to remove partition, reformat or do anything at all with it.

Eventually got something off Hirew's Boot CD to partially sort it, then into another PC to use the Disk Management to get it all working again.

Strangest thing I have come across yet though.

My mistake was not using a big enough hammer!

I really enjoyed the 64bit when it was working and would certainly choose it over the 32bit.
 
64 bit all the way here and 12 Gig of RAM :-)

If you buy Windows 7 you get 32 and 64 bit, do yourself a favour and install 64 bit and get as much ram in the machine as possible.

64Bit Lightroom runs like a dream on my 64Bit Vista machine, not had the time to upgrade the macin PC to Windows 7 yet, but our laptops are running 64 Bit Windows 7 and I really like it.

If you are looking to spec up a new machine, I can really reocmmend a watercooled overclocked i7 920.

Well the RAM is still working perfectly well with XP 64 now, so which process are you talking about?
