OK, so I've done enough investigating to accept the fact that until Nikon releases a codec for 64 bit, which seems unlikely, I will not be able to view NEF thumbnails in PSE 9.

What I can't understand though, is that I can load, and view, a NEF file for processing in PSE 9 (Camera RAW 6.4) and yet I can't see it as a thumbnail.

A way around this I have found is to shoot RAW and JPG and display them side-by-side, then in effect I can see the RAW file as well.

RAW thumbnails I can view in ViewNX.

Ho-Hum.

Not sure why windows can't do it. On a mac you can view NEF raw files as thumbnails and even previews up to full screen in the folder views. I tried to get this on a Windows PC but couldn't.

You can get a third party codec pack fastpictureviewer that will let you view thumbnails from raw files.

It's not free, but you could be waiting a long time for the free codec from Nikon. Canon is the same when it comes to x64 codecs. :shake:

can you view them in windows pic viewer? or does that not help you
