Yesterday, Microsoft introduced the Windows 11 update. The new update brings a visual overhaul and will also require manufacturers to include a front-facing webcam on laptops and tablets from 2023.

Every tablet and laptop/notebook I've used has had one IIRC. They've all been treated the same way - a strip of electrical or Gaff tape over them.

PS and how come MS are dictating for a functionality that impacts of a user visual privacy? I knew of one person a few years back who taped over the laptop and handheld device(s) front facing cameras...............will there be a day when the Laptop will refuse to function unless the front camera is operating and 'seeing' the users face?

Seems completely sensible and I think every Apple device has had one since about 2010.

That was my initial thought too, that's one way of killing of the second hand market I guess ..
Unless there is also a jump through hoops option to reset everything.

The facial recognition requires an IR camera and is built around a technology called Windows Hello (essentially FaceID but came out before). Microsoft aren't mandating facial recognition cameras and I know when we ordered 2,000 laptops at work, we had to specify the IR cameras.

It's because they are becoming more like Apple, forcing things on users they don't want or need.

There's a famous picture of Mark Zuckerberg that shows his laptop. He was taping over the camera years ago.....

With the advance in home working all our desktop PC's have now been replaced by laptops, connected via dockingstation to desktop keyboard & monitors etc.

My laptop for this is usually run closed (keeping the screen off & blocking the view of the camera. I wonder what w11 would make of that sort of set-up which I'm sure will be increasingly common....

Windows 11 won't care. It's just to create a standard build for Windows 11 devices.

Not sure I like the way they are going with Windows 11. There seems to be a definite trend towards moving all your access to a Microsoft account. I can't even get my phone recognised unless I create a link through an MS account. I mean, let them have all your date, why not?

Can't say I like the idea of giving any company data about me, and try to limit it where I can, but you can't blame to M$ for trying to get on a similar playing field to Apple and Google, and the amount of data they 'collect'. As well as amassing data, and the money made from data, M$ obviously feel the need to accrue more money from going back on their claim of Win 10 being being the last version of Windows.

I hate it, but I suppose it does serve one purpose; it means people that like the look of Apple, but aren't daft enough to waste their money on one, can now have one that looks the same.

I can't speak for Chrome books but Windows laptops have had an inbuilt camera for more years than I care to remember so MS are quoting the obvious.
