My oldish laptop (Thinkpad W520) has win 10 version 1903 dated 22/11/2019.

The most recent installed cumulative update is 25/10/2019 (KB4577671)

The settings update and security tab, says my software is up to date (last checked today), but also has a message about a feature update (2004) from 10 May 2020 isn't yet available for my device.

However, I'm not sure why I'm not being offered 1909, which extends the support period (but not by much).

Can anyone suggest why I haven't got 1909 installed

Thanks

Possibly your laptop won't take it ... I think it is possible to try to force the upgrade but might not be the best thing to do.

Thanks, I did wonder that, but from what I have found, the suggestion is that the requirements for 1909 are the same as 1903.

Not 100% sure but I think it may be a 'readiness' thing.

The likes of Dell and HP etc because they have bespoke drivers for some of their installed coomponents.....................perhaps indirectly limit the potential for v1909 to be installed??? Whether you can force it to update to the v1909 version would need some clarification?

Edit ~ thinking back my home built PC got v1909 pushed to it is an odd way ~ on the Settings Update Page it still showed v1903 as the last Features Update but on the System Info it said v1909 ! But I have now had v2004 delivered to it ;)

PS As I recall, v1903 had v1909 covertly inside it already and one report I read suggested that the Update triggered "turning on the v1909 lights" rather that a significant download.

Thanks I didi find something about the last update of v1903 specifically including software needed to run the 1909 update, but this may need to be activated by admin. But the more I've been reading about it, the more confused I became - hence my question here !

I had the same thing and disabling the non compatible onboard USB 3.0 ports in the bios sorted it for me.
I'm now on Win 10 2004 without issues.

Thanks, but a) how did you find out they were incompatible and b) does that mean you have now have nowhere to plug in something like a card reader?

Bespoke in what way?
My Dell laptop uses the manufacturers drivers like Intel, Nvidia, Qualcomm, Realtek etc.
There are not any WDM drivers installed either from what I can see in device manager.

Update your drivers, in particular anything Realtek as there are still driver-blocks in place for the upgrade.

However, there is a serious performance issue with 1909 that requires a CU to resolve. Upgrade drivers and go straight to 2004 when offered

Or even 20H2 now.

This PC claims to be running 20H2 but it installed like a monthly update rather than a full feature update so I don't believe it.
I powered up its twin (same Intel chipset and software installation but weaker processor) and was initially offered 20H2 but that offer disappeared after the .NET framework update had completed. As you say, it's early days yet.
