My computer was fine until the weekend, then has started to run really slow, i'm talking 30 sec delay to do anything, won't shut down.. CPU and memory usage are OK, with nothing using any more than normal..

Is there a list of free programs to use for scan and check for issues? I left it running malware bytes this morning, and also use windows defender.. is there anything better or a specific way of checking for stuff..

Just in time for Christmas photo editing !! Grr..

Thanks

Did Malwarebytes find anything?

I left it scanning but it had found 107 items!! will clean it when I'm home from work

Also try CCleaner and unless you have already done it, run a full virus scan ... Avast have a free option :)

Do you have an SSD or mechanical hard disk?

I had similar behaviour on a relatives laptop. Mechanical HDD + Kaspersky equals problem. Lots of disk thrashing. PreFetch/Superfetch generating lots of disk IO and Kaspersky generally getting in the way.
I tweaked prefetch and superfetch to only operate on files required for boot as oppose to applications which reduced the disk IO and it became usable, although still not brilliantly quick.

Disabling Kaspersky made it much happier, but I didn't really want to leave it that way.

What spec is the laptop, which program is task manager saying is using pc resources. How old is you laptop?

It's an all in one dell 2310 inspriron.. Its a mechanical HDD.. Found 148 items so I have cleaned those, its a bit better but the internet is now so slow its unusable.. Will try ccleaner now..

How much RAM?

How .much free space on the hard drive?

I also noticed tonight that embedded video in facebook was really struggling, could it be video drivers? it has AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5000 series in it..

I have no idea what any of that means.. Sorry..

Hmm! Not a W10 user (actually keeping it at arms length) does it have a defragmentation tool built-in like W7 what is the defrag analysis report I.e. does it need defragging?

What anti virus do you use.........and I do hope you have only one av programme installed? More than one and they as I understand it do not play well and cause big headaches.

Try pressing crtl+alt+del once and bring up the task monitor and see what programme and processes are running and see if you can find the culprit. Also have a look whilst the panel is open for programs that run on boot up and see what you can turn off.

To be honest if your computer has so much malware according to the scan. I would format and reinstall a fresh copy of windows.

Call up the task manager (no idea how in Win 10 but in Win 7 it's Ctrl-Alt-Del, all pressed at the same time) and check the performance window.

This should tell you if the processor is hitting a peak (95-100%) this will cause it to run really slow as it struggles to cope.

If that's the problem then you need to find what programs are causing the slowdown.
.

You could try a windows refresh. Fairly easy to do on windows 10 and there is an option to keep settings etc

So you have a mechanical hard disk. Are you running any antivirus software?
To be fair, the 148 items found by a MalwareBytes scan could just be cookies. Without seeing what they were, it's hard to tell whether there was actually any malware running.

Hold down <Control> + <Shift> + <Escape> to start task manager and click on the performance tab. That will show you CPU, Memory, Disk and Network Utilisation. Maybe post a screen capture of what you see (<Alt> + <PrintScreen>) and then paste into Paint. You can then save and upload to imgur.com and post a link.

The OP did say "CPU and memory usage are OK, with nothing using any more than normal.." Though without qualifying how he determined that?

Processor and memory looking ok, nothing using anything more than normal.. Ccleaner did a clean and I left it running window defender last night, it's still scanning this morning

I'm conscious that without some further investigation, we're going to wind up nuking this machine from high orbit (reinstall) only to have the problem resurface.

There's a bottle neck somewhere. From the symptoms you describe (CPU and memory being okay) it's either disk i/o or network. Hence asking to see a screen shot from the performance tab in your task manager window.

Please could you clarify, is your main issue that the machine is slow or that the internet is slow?

Yet another Dell PC with Windows 10 problems!

I have also found Windows 10 Slows down periodically (once a week(ish)), but discovered it was downloading and processing updates (for Windows & MS Office 365) in the background and it was not informing me.

Will stick up a screen shot later, whole machine is slow.. there is even a 5-10 sec lag trying to scroll through program list in the menu bar..

It's a bit unfair to blame the hardware at this stage!

uh huh. all of our W10 machines at work are dell. not a single issue.

some models we were going to try to update had limited driver support but dell openly said on their driver download page that the system had not been tested for W10.

This Dell has had 2 problems since upgrading to Windows 10
  1. Kaspersky Internet Security needed a patch - so software based.
  2. Win 10 update caused problems with Outlook - so software based.

Neither of which are "Dell" issues? :)

Kaspersky and Windows 10 are not good friends, as per my previous post.

Why would they be Dell issues ... didn't require any action from Dell, they required the software provider to update their software?

I disagree, when patched Kaspersky worked absolutely fine and the Win 10 update was quickly resolved (all versions of Windows have had an update problem at some stage).

W10 was released in July.
As of December 13th, the latest greatest Kaspersky running on the latest greatest W10 on a 2nd Gen i5 laptop with 8 GB RAM and a mechanical HDD makes for one unusable mess. That was after giving the machine a thorough once over and only improved by either disabling Kaspersky or partially disabling some of W10's application caching technologies. Go figure.

Now let's get back on topic and wait for the OP to reply.

When my Windows 10 laptop (core i7, 1000 gb SSD, 16MB memory, Avira professional, Malwarebytes etc etc) started running ridiculously slow recently, it turned out ultimately that the problem lay with my browser (Firefox) and that when I uninstalled it, and reinstalled it on default settings, everything was back to normal. No idea how, but I must have somehow altered a setting in it. (Meantime, of course, I had scanned with CrapCleaner, MWB, SpyBot, SuperAntiSpyware, etc, stopped several start-up programmes, and all the rest...

In respect of Neil's feedback about the work PC's all being Dell and all AOK I wonder that as they are corporate therefore likely have a more controlled/restricted setup, whereas individuals personal kit is more likely to very widely varied in what they have installed. Therefore if W10 upgraders are going to have issues it will be those in that category rather than a more controlled environment.

For me, I will wait until I really have to to upgrade.....................though possibly do a new build next year and keep W7 running until EOL???

not just work (although i am referring to a bog standard setup of windows, ms office etc), home machines too (standard and custom builds).

short of hardware/software compatibility issues I can think of zero reason to hold off moving to W10.

Try Norton Power Eraser ... it is free . and very good. I had no end of problems when I upgraded from 7 to 10 I run that it found no end of problems. I am now running windows 10 and am pleased with it

Personally I would stay away from Norton products. I used to have Norton AV and was broadly happy with it but my PC at that time W2K I think I had as the OS then became like the OP suddenly very unresponsive..............long story made short it turned out it NAV and Symantec were less than helpful I ended up uninstalling it and needed to use both NAV's own removal tool plus third party ones to remove it quite intrusive tentacles from the system. At that time I went to Kaspersky whose service by comparison was a breath of fresh air!

Having said that SWMBO has a Dell with NAV pre-installed................and so far so good ~ fingers crossed ;)

Tried Norton Power eraser, found one file which it deleted, defender is finding things which is also deleting.. it seems to be getting a bit better with each program removing something..

Now running defender again and also doing a defrag on C drive

What are the various programs finding to remove, tracking cookies, malware, Trojans.....???

PS Ref defrag and Neil''s feedback about it..............I learn something new every day :)

Not sure, but it seems a good bit better now, defender just did a quick scan (which was a lot faster than the previous efforts) and also didn't find anything..
