YOu see, this is why I'm not installing 10.

Just installed the very latest drivers from NVidia, and update has downloaded this...

The wrong drivers, for the wrong card, despite me being bang up today already.

Win 10 would have just installed this and there's be nothing I could do about it.

I installed this one 2 computers (which I use for remote access through Team viewer) only to find out I cannot Wake via LAN as there is not updated drivers, UGH back to Win 8.1! Both were around 5GB downloads aswell.

I am certainly going to wait awhile before I even think about installing Windows 10.

Though I suspect we all will some day.............

Hmm I guess you can't read the screen then ;)

Care to explain? That's a screen shot from WIndows 8, not 10. If it was 10, it would push the install of that driver without any way I can choose not to... and it's not the correct driver.

Assumptions. Assumptions everywhere.

No assumptions Neil. You can only defer an update install on Win 10, not chose not to install it.

What is the point of putting an update screen shot from windows 8 then. The explanation is that it says it is optional. Besides windows 10 is optional as well. I choose which graphics drivers I have on my Surface Pro 3, the originals ones do not get pushed on to it somehow b

Because Windows update whether in 8 or 10, has clearly decided to try and install an incorrect driver. If it did this in 8, it would have almost certainly done so in 10. The difference is in 8, I can chose not to install it.

In Windows 8, yes... which is why I have ignored it. In 10, it would have just installed and there would be nothing I coudl have done. Even if I had manually installed the correct driver afterwards, the next update would merely over write it again. (ask me how I know).

Besides windows 10 is optional as well.

Nope.... you get no choice. Go read the plethora of articles discussing this. You on a tech preview of something? MS made it quite clear that that all updates are automatic, and can not be cancelled.. only deferred.

Yes probably, but I would only buy a machine with it already installed on it. If the machine is already geared up for 10 then it should run OK. But even then, I may look what else is available :)

Not if they don't relent on this auto update nonsense I won't, no.. Unless I can get hold of an enterprise version, as that's the only one that allows control of updates.

Auto security and bug fixes are one thing if they do no interfere with what you are in the middle of doing.
Adding, or worse, removing/changing features is quite another.

I don't have to read the articles, I'm running it ;) and as I said I have purposely installed a different driver. It is not forced it is optional.

Really keen to upgrade to windows 10 on my main system for the better 4k support but had some issues with displaylink drivers which I use to run my multiple monitor setup so going to hold off a bit longer.

I installed it today and now the buttons on my trackpad on the laptop dont work and it disconnects from the internet every 30 seconds, Im ready to throw it out the window

I think of updating one of my laptops (which i don't use very often) but even that won't happen anytime soon.

Im happy how everything works smooth on Windows7 (not even upgraded for free to Windows8.1 so don't see point upgrading to Windows10 either)

(y) Another stubborn Windows 7 user, I too love Windows 7. I am not budging any time soon either ;)

It's funny, when I was a Mac user I always witnessed this anti Mac behaviour. Now I'm a Windows user I'm seeing exactly that kind of approach towards windows 10. Now there is one constant in this story. And there was me thinking these people are anti apple, they are just again any kind of progression.

So the current free rollout is creating the biggest ever pool of unbeknown beta testers where the software itself reports issues et all (unless folk have turned off that feature) but Enterprise version when released will cynic that I am have a price tag.

In principle I leaning towards the wait until 2016 in the hope that whatever build number it has been reached by then will be more universally compatible.........or as suggested a new build with hardware drivers certified for W10

No only do I still use windows 7 I also install windows 7 on all new builds I do

Has MS yet declared when W7 will be eol?

I hate being forced to do something, especially when I am content the way things are. Just sneaky gits make things no longer usable :punch:

Here's the windows 10 update screen

Where on yours does it allow you to choose what updates to install or not, because this was the main reason I put my Win 8 back ups back on and left 10 alone. Updates are automatic. You can defer the updates, or even cancel the update service completely in the registry if you know what you're doing, but that's just as bad in many ways.

How is MS being able to push anything they want progression? If they want me to have a "Bing toolbar" they can just push it as an update, and I will have it. I can uninstall it of course, but they'll just keep pushing it. You think having an OS that allows the user no control over what is installed as an update is progression? Care to explain that?

We were talking about your graphics card driver weren't we? If you have installed one it doesn't get force ably updated to another.

Oh stop panicking and fantasising, it doesn't do anything like that. My default search is duckduckgo and it was easiest ever to configure alternatives and updates respect that and leaves in place.

That was an example of a potential issue with an auto update system, yes. Mine forces the wrong driver on me when I'm on 10. I have two graphics cards. I don't mean a SLI set up, I mean I have a seperate card driving my second monitor. I do this purposely because with NVidia cards, driving 2 screens from 1 GPU prevents the card from clocking down at idle. It causes some confusion, even in Win 8, but with 10, it DOES force an update of the wrong driver. I was on 10 last week... this is not me guessing here... it DID force an update of the wrong driver.

I'm not saying it DOES install a Bing Toolbar.. stop reading everything I write literally. I am saying, you have no way of selecting what is, or is not installed. Are you telling me there is, and everyone else is wrong?

How's having absolutely no control over updates progress?

Well that is a change of tune ;) your original post was all like would and could, now all of a sudden it has turned into a has? Hmmm

What other way have I got that to read and respond to words. It's a forum and all we've got, perhaps if you brought some honesty in the posts and truly say what you mean and experience we can have an adult conversation.

Where was your post; Windows 10 has installed the wrong driver, help? Nope it now transpired you then downgraded again and then start posting about it. Hmm very different than your opening post. You know what, if it stinks, it's probably because it smells. Enjoy

I've no idea what your problem is. I've tried Windows 10. I downloaded the ISO before it even downloaded it in Windows Update. The reason I took it off was because it either installed a driver for my GT430, and disabled my GTX980, or vice versa. Whenever I tried to manually install drivers, it just pushed it's own choice on me. The reason would appear to be, as highlighted in my OP, is that Windows, if left to it's own devices, seems to be installing a driver for a GTX970. In Win 8, this is no problem, as I can chose what to install or not. In Windows 10, it gave me no option.

Why would I lie about using Win 10? Everyone on Windows 8 has a free upgrade to 10 lying in wait in their Windows Update.

Why are you just behaving like the biggest Windows 10 fan boy ever? Of course I put Win 8 back on, because in 10, I never had a fully functional PC.

[edit]

The point remains... how is having MS push any update they want without your consent, or approval progress?

And bingo, here we go just proven my point as made earlier in the thread.

Can't update one laptop - get the Something happened error. This was a clean install of windows 7 with all service packs and office 2013
Downloaded the ISO, ran a clean install but then of course you need a serial number. Had a quick look around, not sure what it gives over 8.1, I'll wait a while for the main machine to update, might take that from 7 to 8.1

I got that.. couldn't upgrade at all. I did a clean install of 7. It worked then, but it consistently failed to upgrade straight from 8, even after removing stuff like Start 8 and Object Dock, theme patches etc.

You can't do a clean install from the ISO. You have to UPGRADE using the ISO, so you need a valid Windows 7 or 8 on the machine, activated first. However... once you've done that, you can then get your Win10 key, and from then on you CAN do a clean install from that ISO.

On the bright side - I've just downloaded my lightroom 6 upgrade, moving up from version 4.

I used windows for a LOT of years and constantly became annoyed with it before making the change to Mac and IOS, big price increase but in my opinion well worth it and the aftercare is second to none.
