So now it's been about for a while and hopefully teething issues ironed out, what is the general consensus on Win10? Any advantages to upgrading just now? Or stick to Win7 for the time being until I'm forced to move?

Haven't seen so much about it on here since the initial complaints so am wondering if things have improved yet.

I'm not unhappy with Win7 but just wondering if any new features make it worth giving it a shot or am I going to end up ruining LR or PS in the process?

I do not care for the prospect of changing from 7.
so i will wait till the last minute. From all acconts a big change is on it's way.
So it is probably best to let it settle.

i like it very easy on the eye and nice an basic

I prefer Windows 7 but at the end of the day, you are still using the same apps no matter which OS you use

If you have doubts don't do it. simple.

Faster, gave my old PC a new lease of life, but be aware of older device support, especially if moving to 64 bit os. Otherwise, for me, it's a win all around and is much better than win 7

Another vote for Win 10, had no real issues and quickly got into it without hassle :)

I like WIn10, though I my main-box is a Win8.1 machine and it just will not do the upgrade to Win10, just freezes. PC is only 18 months old. I have already tried disconnecting everything from the box before doing the upgrade but it still refuses :( Win8.1 support will run for a few years yet so by the time that runs out, I'll probably have a new pre-installed win10 box anyway so not too worried about rushing to upgrade yet.

I updated my older Win7 laptop to Win10 as I heard it may speed it up a bit and it seems to be marginally faster. I'm not too sure that I like the push to more information sharing with the OS as well as other internet companies and Windows 10 seems to happily leak far more data than others.

I guess most folk will understand that using Nectar or Tesco Clubcard, they are being paid for their shopping data. No surprise when you get a voucher for items that they think you may be running out of. This payment back in points. I wonder how many people understand that the cost of using Google / Facebook and others is tracking. At least Tesco only get your supermarket data - others have the potential of far more.

Thanks everyone for your opinions on Win10 so far! Might give it a go later this week and see how I get on. Will post feedback here if and when I complete the install and have had a chance to see how it went.

I went from win 8.1 to 10 but just did not like it,so i reverted back to 8.1,you can always try it for a few weeks to see if you like it or not.:)

10 works well for me, prefer it to Mac OSX. It's worth upgrading as 7 is obsolete and you'll find there's a lack of support for security and software in future. 10 is fast, stable and what 8 should have been, but 7 is still as good productivity wise

After the November 'update' I had enormous problems with W10 PCs not being able to see anything on the LAN including themselves! The latest Insider build has allegedly cured this but I'd fixed most of it already by stopping my W7 PC from being the browse master and, possibly, changing the workgroup name back to WORKGROUP. The remaining problem is that the PC that I allowed to upgrade from W7HP to W10 still can't see the non-Windows servers but I'm hoping that will be fixed in the next update when the Insider features trickle down.

I have been using it since November and happy with it, although i didnt upgrade. I had a 8 year old XP machine so i had invested in a new one and it had windows 10. I find it a bit weird talking about apps and things which refer only to mobile devices when im only using it on PC, but that might be because I am a luddite :P

@Tulipone - what specific areas are you referring to on the data leak side of things? I have been through all the settings about sharing data and turned them all off, from a guide i found online. is there anything else i should be turning off?

Excellent analogy

I had a 8 year old XP machine
I cried when I had to swap to 7 from XP ( for the same reason) :D
but that might be because I am a luddite :p
And me :D

I shall stick with 7 which actually I quite like, until I absolutely have to swap to 10.
I managed to turn off the annoying little icon on the task bar, and those damned pop ups that were threatening to "upgrade me"
( don't ask me how, I found step instructions on the it on the web and followed them)

Re data leaking/sharing, there are several options during initial setup. Take the customise route rather than blindly doing express settings. (Ha cross posted with byker)

Pretty much this.

Wonder if that's an issue on your particular config.

No bother here on a medium active directory domain and home workgroup.

Im a big fan of windows 10, havnt had any issues what so ever :)

I did the update from 8.1 to 10, but there were driver problems with my Dell XPS. In the end I reverted because of driver compatibility problems rather than the OS being poor (TBH it's light years ahead of 7 and a little better than 8.1). I may well try another install if there's another major update in the hope of better compatibility (and Dell getting their support act together).

I've been using it since the day the upgrade became available back in July. Works absolutely fine and no issues. I like it, best Windows for desktop use yet; nice fresh user interface, excellent search, very stable, good support for old and new and some obscure applications. Can't see any reason other than hardware incompatibility as to why anyone wouldn't want to upgrade.

I don't think it's any big deal - just think to upgrade before the free offer expires if you're not replacing your machine before then.

Features? Who needs features? I mean - Cortana? Yuk.

There's a Microsoft facility that'll check your current installation & advise you whether an upgrade's likely to work in terms of hardware / drivers / apps (& give you a list).

You have a month to roll back to the OS you had (the u/g saves your old setup on your hd - I was happy enough to zap mine after a fortnight to free up space).

It works fine here as a production tool, though I could quibble with aspects of the GUI, but that's always been the case.

I went from XP to 8 first & that was the major hurdle in terms of what would & wouldn't work (a couple of useful apps had to be cast out with regret).

Blimey, mate - what a recipe for life! Take a few risks, for [PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER]'s sake.

It's becoming a bit of a moot point for me anyway just now as struggling to get the install to work. The one from the MS website does nothing and the cmd prompt batch code to make it run via Windows Update does nothing either. Frustrating!

When I upgraded several months ago there was a notification in the taskbar saying the download was ready (several weeks after a pop up asked if I'd like to upgrade) - Microsoft had been staggering the updates possibly to relieve pressure on their servers, not sure if they still are. Have you had any notifications like that or does it appear in Windows Update?

when you say the cmd prompt? you mean wuauclt.exe /updatenow ? ran in an elevated CMD prompt? if so did you clear the software download folder first?

bottom line is W10 is pretty future proofed against hacks and stuff so keeping you up front and focusing less on computers and more on taking pics :-)

It was a batch file of 2 short solutions and one longer one neither of which worked. The stuff you wrote above - can you explain further?

Browse to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download and delete the contents.

On the Start Menu find the Command Prompt (try accessories menu?), right click it and "run as administrator".

In the command prompt type:

wuauclt.exe /updatenow

(press return)

Go to the Windows Update page and it should be downloading updates.

See if that works.

Thanks,Neil - will give that a go later today and see how it goes!

Hi Neil,

I tried that but it only downloaded updates for Win7. :(

id run the system readiness tool for W10 just in case there is some compatibility issue.

otherwise you might have to go down the USB installer route and just run the installer within W7 so that it upgrades.
If the System Readiness tool is the one on the main Microsoft download page for Win10 then I ran it multiple times and nothing happened. I downloaded two different versions of it and neither seemed to do anything. Will investigate the USB route then and see how I get on. Cheers again for your help, Neil!
