Just a thought .................... has anyone used window roller blinds for backdrops? :help:

I will be decorating a room soon and wondered if it was possible to adapt a window recess to hold a couple of roller blinds that will come right down to the floor, roughly 7'6" x 7' 9" wide. I thought it would make great backdrops if I can arrange it?

Every time I go to Ikea, I look at there roller blinds and wonder. Not sure if the texture would look ok, but quite cheap.

I have a large white black out blind from Ikea in front of the main window that I often use for simple headshots. Bought with photography in mind, but its an excellent blind also.

Throw a light at it and it looks like any other white backdrop.

I used small blue one for chroma key :) worked fine.

I have used the lilac one in my daughter bedroom before. If you get a coloured one, then they are usually white on the reverse, so 2 colours for the price of one, but you have to be able to unclip it and turn it around. And unless you get a really longone, you won't have a train.

Took a trip to Ikea £21 200 x 200 blackout roller blind screwed it to a baton, drilled to holes same size as my backdrop stands. Rolled it out only managed 2 shots with a speedlite diffusser 125 f6.5 WOW worth every penny would make anyone a perfect home kit will buy a white one for reverse side. Roped her in doors to have a pic lol, if any would like see results. And a pic of the setup pm me and i'll send you them

Lawrie,
don't think the Romans has cameras and therefore didn't need backdrops.................... although they did have red cloaks!

May take a trip to Ikea ......................... thanks for the tip guys.

why not stick it up here :)

pm your e-mail Dan and will sort some pictures out likewise anyone else, could not help havin a play. Got the big guns out to, 750r bowens just see how it would look. bit limited for space so had to use them on min lol but yer nice. put a table on the train and it did make a mark so lesson learnt. but in total spent a 11/2 and very happy with the images.

Now this is a really excellent idea. There are quite a few places online you can order black out blinds, so could probably order an extra long one to have a train. The blackout ones are quite vinyl-y so I imagine would be easy to get footprints off too.

I like the idea of the roller blind.

I took this with a £5 black sheet as a backdrop, I had not ironed it btw

I will remove the image if I'm butting in

The lights and to powerful for the size room making it look grey, even on min. These blinds come in many colours and sizes prefect for a home studio.

I can see shares in Ikea going up soon :) Looks like a good idea though

After a few requests heres some pics, 2 normal background supports. At the top of mine there is a bolt about 1 1/2 long, and using a standard 2x1 roofing baton. The blinds bought were 2m, so cutting the baton to 260cm measure in 10cm and on the I" side of the baton drill a hole 1 1/2 deep so sits on the head with no movement. attach the blinds to JOB DONE lol.

O then paint it a pretty colour

how do you light it?

i got a white background today but not a clue how to shine it up and remove shadows without washing people out

Both work well as you can see. My studio lights were to close and to powerful. but as you can see the speedlite in a home studio, was great not to powerful. Was oing to sell the 430exII I got because it never had enough power for the job i wanted so brought a 580exII but miight keep it now. Ideal form small cheap studio.
