Wind Power - what a joke

If that's correct how many would it take to power the uk, one factory isn't very much, Ford don't actually run a vehicle assembly line at dagenham any more it's just engine assembly so probably compressors and air tools, compressors only run when the air pressure drops, they aren't running all the time so one compressor can power dozens of tools
Having worked there for 32 years I knew something had gone missing but just couldn't put my finger on it.
Stats on the 2 original Ford Turbines

Site address:Ford Dagenham Estate, London
Running Since: May 2004

Number of turbines:2

Rotor diameter:70m

Hub height:85m

Capacity:3.6MW

Green electricity per year:5.92 million units

Homes powered (equiv):1,794

Tonnes of CO2 saved p.a.:2,546

I believe the third turbine is the same as the original two.
There is more to Ford at Dagenham than just engine manufacturing, but it is only that which the turbines provide power.
The turbines do provide power for internal lighting, powering machines (not just air tools) power to offices, the gym and sauna, medical, as well as all the external lighting on the estate and probably a few other things too.

Appologies, I got you mixed up with another poster.

no worries.....;)

It's proven in that without it none of us would exist. The technology needs work but it's going to happen.

its proven in that we understand how it works and as you say drives the stars etc.....but proving the theory you can use that to generate commercially viable electricity is another matter.

French Nobel laureate in physics, Pierre-Gilles de Gennes, said, "We say that we will put the sun into a box. The idea is pretty. The problem is, we don't know how to make the box." and I think that sums up the problems with it rather well.

The reactor being built in france at the moment with the aid of the international community has the following goal

ITER's mission is to demonstrate the feasibility of fusion power, and prove that it can work without negative impact

and won't of done that till 2038, so its not really proven as useful yet. I hope it will be, but at the moment it has as many issues as wind, solar, geothermal etc etc

32 years, you must have started on the MKIV Cortina , that seems like a loooooong time ago

My neighbour worked at dagenham for 20 years 1970-1990 , I had no idea how big it was until he explained his brother worked there for the same period and they never bumped into each other at work once in all that time.

I'm not saying alternative fuels don't have a part to play just the power needs of a city are way greater that a factory , how much to they cost to manufacture install and maintain compared to the electricity they produce.

If the government is so committed to green power why have they just dropped the subsidy for installing solar panels by 50% thereby shafting all the businesses set up to supply them based on the government subsidy

One reason I would never pay to convert a car to LPG is the tax break that makes it cheap is on a 12 month rolling agreement, if enough people convert it'll get dropped

Yes when I sarted my apprenticeship, the Mk1V Cortina would have been in production. In the last year of my apprenticeship the Sierra production had started. The size of the factory is now greatly reduced, but what's left (Engine Plant and Stamping and Tooling where I work) still covers a large area.

it works pretty well for denmark...

we'll get fusion eventually, but this (especially offshore) is the way until we get that.

Wasn't it in Denmark that a wind turbine nacelle exploded?

Don't we have fusion already? Fission will be the way forward if they can get it sorted.
