If I purchase a newer laptop with Win8 then replace it with Win7, will the M-SATA still be recognised ?

I doubt if you will be able to "downgrade" to Win 7 from Win 8 - I know you can't do this from Win 7 to XP.

Also your laptop may only allow you to use the Windows disc supplied or the recovery disc, so even attempting to install a different version of Win 8 may not be allowed - unless you get the new edition of Win 8 - that may be allowed.

.

there shouldn't be any issue with installing another os on the laptop. for example if you went out and purchased W7 home premium retail disk there is nothing stopping you from formatting the hard drive and installing that. you wont however be able to use your W8 licence to cover you for W7 without buying it.

PROVIDING you can find all of the correct drivers. which will also determine whether your m-sata works.

I already own pro and ultimate win7. But my concern is the ability to use the m-SATA...it might just be worth going for an SSD laden laptop instead.

I'm using a M-SATA SSD drive on a Windows 7 laptop fine.

Thats good news Chris, Did you need any other drivers and if so were they easy to get hold of. What make is the M-Sata ?
Did the Laptop have Win7 on from purchase or did it have WIN8 and you changes the OS

Like I said, it will depend on whether you can find working windows 7 drivers for your hardware.

Cheers Neil, As always , solid advice.

The driver needed will be the chipset driver, not for the m-sata card. Which laptop is it? Given how new Win8 is, I would expect there to be a driver for Win7 somewhere.

Hi Andy,
Im just doing my home work before I purchase. I want a very fast machine with long life battery and a decent non reflective screen. USB3 would be a bonus too. Probably 15'' would be the smallest Id want to go in screen size.

I was recommended a particular model but it was a bit too thick as I want to put it in my Peli along with the rest of my kit. A slim design would also be a benefit.

I dont want to fall into the trap of buying something that is not suitable for what I need.

Mine is a bit of a beast, so I have a Samsung 830 128GB SSD as my boot drive, the 256GB MSATA SSD as my video/photo editing scratch disc and games drive and then a traditional storage drive. Works a treat :-)

Sounds meaty !... I need slim profile machine...If I was going for a beats and wasnt worried about size or weight, Id be after something similar to your Alienware
