Ladies and gentlemen...have you heard about our Photographer of the Year competition? Open to all ages, both sexes (even those in the middle...Looking at you Rob!), and even your pet dog if he can take a photo!

Come on, it's a great bit of fun, guaranteed to get you thinking and out shooting with your camera.
And the best bit of all, of course (besides the adoration of your peers on Talk Photography for you taking part), is the possibility of winning some seriously cool prizes! All you have to do is take a photo! You've more than likely got a camera, you know how to take a photo...that's the hardest part over with!

Come take a look at the current round over here

I'm using this for some inspiration to get me back into the groove, starting to get the bug back now, shame i sold all my old lenses :(. Ah well, new 10-20 should arrive today :D

I've entered this every month this year, and would really encourage others to as well.

It's really made me think more about my photography and has certainly resulted in an improvement in my technique.

The prizes are pretty awesome too.

I would love to do it Marcel but I just cant get out so can only cover a small range of the subjects that can be shot indoors.

Other than the landscape round (last month) all the rounds could be done in a home studio.

I plan on throwing myself into this next year, I've toyed with it on the odd month the last couple of years but my POTD has really not allowed me to focus on the POTY but next year I'll be 100% focussed on the challenge :D

Even landscapes can be done indoors! You just have to get your thinking cap on and get creative!

What's a landscape to an ant perhaps? (That sort of thinking)

Good stuff, I see the various challenges have limits set to how much PP is applied."no PP" and "any PP" are self explanatory but I was wondering where the boundary lies for those challenges which state neither - I've had a look at some of the entries and the descriptions of the PP applied seems pretty vague and quite varied.

The general concensus seems to be that anything that can be done in a darkroom with film can be done on the digital too, this extends to white balance for digital too.

Thanks George. Is it ok to tinker with dodge & burn and such or not? Is there a fuller explanation of what's allowed??

Dodge and burn is fine. There is more info on what is allowed in the main thread of the competition:

Its not as daunting as you think! Its not like youre competing against 10's of world class photographers - most of us are just trying to improve and try new techniques...

Thanks George, I had seen the main thread but wanted further clarification to prevent problems further down the line. Competition rules are often broken/misunderstood/my dog ate them before I read them even when they're written as clearly as possible (remember that composite landscape?). :)

Im genuinely not 100% sure which one you're on about - was it with this years POTY?

In general whats acceptable about PP is down to interpretation, but its generally accepted if you can do it in a dark room then you can do it digitally...

I try not to take it too personally with results - thats not to say it isnt frustrating, especially when someone thinks outside the box for a photo that wins! lol...

I couldn't possibly comment. :p

Fair enough. As long as you don't "go too mad with it" it sounds like pretty much anything's acceptable.

yeh, start creating rabbit/snake hybrid animals and your gonna be questioned...

I did all of last year's, but didn't get the vibe this time, not sure? Possibly the long cold start to the year when I had flu (proper one, not the man type)

Hopefully next year will be different
