Yes
Here's a little contest for you all, to produce a portrait using a light source other than a natural light, a flashgun or studio lights, so desk lamps, flourescent tubes, a torch are all okay, but no "proper" photographic lights.

I'm not looking for technical brilliance, the winner will be the person who makes the most imaginative use of non-photographic lights. To ensure fairness a set-up shot is also required. The images must be new to TP and have not been entered in any other competitions on here either, oh and have been taken between 1-31 August 2009.

The competition will run from August 1st until midnight on August 31st, the winner will receive a 24"/60cm Ezy-Fold Softbox kit.

(Lightstand and flashgun not included)

Get your thinking caps on and......Good luck :)

Thank you kind sir.

I will use a lighthouse for a Demi Moore pregnancy type shot.

Oh Demi, where are you...................?

I'm in danger of looking thick here..... But I'm used to it. :geek:

What sort of set-up shot do you need? - Can you put up an example?

Cheers.

Cool comp Flash, nice one!

Not to come across as a nitpick, but I presume you mean a 24"/60cm or either 15"/40cm. I'm assuming the first one as that's what your selling ;)

I have got a few cool ideas for this, can't wait to have a go!]

Do we post in this thread or is there a seperate one for entries?

one showing the lights positioning etc so he can make sure no proper flash stuff been used at a guess. will also help people to see where and how you did the shot:)

Great, you tell me now I've bought one ....lol , great idea ....:thumbs:

I tell you what, anyone who has already bought one of these from me can choose Strobist goods to the same value from my sales thread if they win - how does that sound?

Just a cpl quick Q's

Do we just post images in this thread?

Would gig lighting count?

That is all...

Yes, just them in this thread (one each only)

Gig lighting is fine

I went and set up a photo, took the photo, was happy with it... until I read the word "portrait"! Damn it!

Seeing as this competition is over now I'm gonna post what my idea was. Instead of a portrait it was light trickery using a glass:

The only PP is curves and levels to create a darker, drearier effect.

Here's a link to how I did it:

Edit: I had to return to take the setup pic so you might notice it's a different wine glass! Gives you an idea of how I created the effect though

Hey that is cool :D ... a lightbox built into the wall ........

Paul

Pics need to be taken after 1st August - I'll be checking the exif ;)

Don't worry, I know mine was 31st of July. I thought July 31st was the closing date, that's why it was taken pre August. :bonk:

You guys keep teasing me with competitions that haven't started yet! Second time I've done this

I really, REALLY don't want to be a buzzkill as I think that is an awesome shot, but could it really be considered a portrait?

I thought a portrait had to be of a person or at least a living thing...

Please do accept me sincere apologies if I'm mislead! No hard feelings either!

No hard feelings on my part. This isn't even an entry! As I said in my previous post I executed an idea and then realised the competition was for portraits. I then stupidly thought the competition was over so decided to let people know what my idea was :bonk: so it was taken outside of the time range anyway :D

So it fails for multiple reasons. No offense taken

Okay beg my pardon for barely reading anything important!

Come on guys get some entries in!

i've got a few ideas but before i go through the pain of setting it up just a question (forgive me if it sounds silly cos im a noob!) - as its a portrait is a full body shot of the person ok? or does the subject need to specifically be the head/face of the subject? also, if there are other subject matters in the photo as well is that ok? such as the light sources used perhaps making the background interest (or even the foreground interest)

Full length, headshot, whatever you want, I'm more interested in how clever you can all be with light ;)

This is my effort

The only lighting was the match, so nothing really set up in terms of lighting.
Comments welcome

Not sure if this fits the criteria of protrait but here is my entry - a silhouette of a wizard!

was taken in a warehouse (lights off) which had a cold room in it. standing in front of the cold room (flourescent tube lighting), a shot of the cold room entrance below:

just had a light behind the camera as well (light from a fork lift truck):

Well I'm having a go at this comp and thanks for putting it up FITP. This is my nearly 15yo daughter Rosie who would love to be a model or an illustrator if she can't make it as a model, yes she is very arty, draws and paints for England. Shot was taken using 2 laptops running notepad :D

Settings 1/5" f5 iso400 she had to keep really still I told her :D
