Looking for the cheapest place to get this OS.:)

Looking for 32 bit probably ultimate, thanks for your replies,oh i dont know any students.:)

Not really any 1 will do i suppose.

Premium would do fine.:)

In which case, get 64bit (assuming your hardware supports it). 32 bit means you won't be able to upgrade to greater than 3Gb of memory and the additional cost is around £1

I reused my Win7 Pro OEM key when I rebuilt my machine (I am the OEM, so I'm allowed to specify what changing the machine means!). The only difference I know of between OEM and retail versions is that retail comes with phoneline support...

Ooops. I tell a lie. 32bit is £4 more expensive than the 64bit....

I only want the 32 bit as i might change my pc next year.
So looking for the absolute cheapest option.

As I said above the 64bit is cheaper than the 32bit. You can move licenses between PCs, but this won't matter if you are buying a ready built machine with OS pre-installed.

The reason i only want the 32 bit for now is because i have some older games that wont work with 64 bit,it has to be 32 bit.:)

No students in your family?
Parents, grandparents and guardians: If you are a parent or guardian or have a grandson or granddaughter for whom you would like to license the software, then you can purchase the software.

It won't run 16 bit apps though, the games he is talking about may be 16 bit jobbies that run under NTVDM. On 32 bit Windows, I have a few that actually run fine under NTVDM as if it is DOS - others I must use DOSbox for.

Windows 7 Pro and Ultimate does come with XP Mode which lets you run older apps on Windows 7 using a virtual xp session running in the background... That might run your old games.

This is James we are talking about
Cheers for that:p:D:lol:

64 bit windows will run 32 bit apps as 32 bit

If I remember right, this is where Windows 7 Pro and Ultimate come in. You can run the older codes in virtual machines which will mean that the games will believe they are installed onto the older OS's

Ah, but consider that for every legitimate copy of windows, there are probably 5 machines installed with illegitimate copies. So that brings it down to around £12 per machine :D

Whether it is still the case or not, I don't know. It used to be that an OEM product key would only work with an OEM disk. With Windows 7, you can use what is called Windows 7 Anytime to upgrade the version of windows over the internet. All you do is enter the product key into the box.
So in theory, if you purchased a full version of windows now, you could use the anytime upgrade if you later purchased a pre-installed version of a cheaper version at a later date.

I can't see a cheaper version around than that quoted above.
I have had some issues with Scan, but they have it as:

~£72.28

it depends how old the computer is, if i remember rightly you need a compatible hardware architecture that has virtualization support to run XP mode

Hardware virtualisation having been around for at least 10 years, it depends more on the cheapness of the processor that was purchased.
However, I think that software virtualisation was supported as well.

Yup... you do fro the one that ships with Win7. But you can run s/w virtualisation on any processor (e.g. virtualbox).

If you need to network two or more pcs go for the ultimate version, for some reason MS crippled networking in the Home versions.
