I bought a wimberley a while back but haven't used it yet. It was second hand so didn't come with an Allen key to attach to tripod, but none of mine fit! Looking online it seems to be a 5/32" Allen key, but being (relatively) young I don't know what that means. Can anybody who has one confirm that this is what I need?

Link doesn't work for me Chris but if it's just a long reach 5/32 Allen Key, would this do?

Thanks (@Archie747 aswell). Yeah I think that's what I need, I just wanted to confirm that it's the correct one as it's the only mention I could find of an allen key (or hex as they seem to call it over there) on the wimberley instructions. I didn't know if they sold them in shops over here but I'll pop into homebase tomorrow to see if they have one.

Homebase, like most high street retail outlets, will probably only have a set of ten or so Imperial allen keys, if they have any at all. A car parts shop may be more likely to have a single key.

Hi Chris,
I can let you have a key, I have a couple of spares it will save you having to buy a set, you may have difficulty finding anyone who sells them individually this days
let me know your address and I'll pop one in the post.

Regards Bob.

That's really kind of you, thank you so much! I'll send you a message with my address.

Chris ......... if you want a tripod mount for your 300mm f4 PF - you can be a reasonably good one on EBay - @gramps pointed me to this - it was only a few £'s, (the Nikon one costs a lot), - I use it now and again, but the majority of the time I use the 300mm PF hand held

It's for the 500 f4. I use the 300 PF handheld like you.

I'm not sure why anyone hasn't said this, but the allen key is NOT for attaching the head to the tripod! It's for setting the minimum amount of rotational drag you get when the sideways rotational control knob is completely untightened. I've never had to adjust mine in this regard.

To attach the head to a tripod you tighten up the rotation knob so there is no movement allowed and then just screw the head on by rotating the entire head.
This is all in their official instructions/manual.

I hope it's not too late for you to have seen this, as i'm not sure if any damage would happen if the centre screw was over-tightened with the allen key. At the least it'd require some adjustment to get the head working nicely again.

Actually I'm wondering whether this is for the Wimberley Gimbal or the Wimberley Tripod Foot ... @htid ?

Yeh, that's not for attaching the head htid. All you need to do is tighen the sideways rotation knob and screw the entire head onto the tripod plate.

Their instruction pdf for it is here https://static.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/108955.pdf

The allen key screw is for adjusting the horizontal panning drag.

The allen key is on its way to you Chris, that pdf from Werecow looks handy, I myself use a Jobu gimble I think they are the mutts nuts when using a long lens and judging by the number of people I see using them it's an opinion shared by many
good luck with it.

Regards Bob.

Wimberly instructions state not to adjust some of the alien bolts (mainly the three in the middle iirc), I'd download a manual as said and check what's what before you twiddle them :)
