Has anyone experience of having a will written without a solicitor getting involved. Any advice gratefully received.

Got a solicitor do mine and the wife, £45.00, wanted to make sure there was no hassles for the kids after experiencing a problem with a deceased relatives will few years ago. Will is left with solicitor and copies given to the kids.

My wife and I made mirror wills about ten years ago - it cost £400 then! Thinking about it it probably cost the solicitor around a tenner to do the second one since only the name on the second will was changed. I decided then that I wouldn't get caught that way again hence my query. Our wills will be extremely simple ;)

Be aware that because many people are price sensitive and solicitors want to compete, when you go to a solicitors office for a will there is a good chance you will only see a "legal executive" rather than a solicitor. I had to execute a will written by such a person and in this case the wording was ambiguous. If your will is straight forward then it is quite straight forward doing it yourself. However if you have children under 18 years old you should appoint trustees and guardians, for that you need a solicitor or at least someone who is well trained in will writing. I suggest you get a "write your own will" book, that way you can check that important protocols such as witnessing are conducted correctly.
 
There are regular charity "make a will" months where the solicitor allegedly devotes their time free and the charity gets the money which the solicitor normally charges. If a will isn't likely to be straightforward, then professional advice should at least be considered, but that doesn't have to be a solicitor.

If you're going to do it yourself, keep the language simple and the instructions clear.
Most importantly, name an executor and have the will witnessed and signed.
 
My will is simple

"To my wonderful family you already have all I had to give. If there is anything left it will pay for lunch and a few drinks.

All my bills/debts are paid off.

All my assets now amount to a sum total of £4,999.99 and is mainly made up of my factory reset Laptop, IPad and mobile phone, along with my camera kit which you can dispose of as you wish.

Essentially there is sod all left that the w@nkpuffins in Westminster can get their grubbies on.

If at some point som halfwit from 'Heir Hunters' ring you - play the MP3 of me PMSL until they hang up.
