will we throw our Canons and Nikons away

Eek! id better get saving!!!

Any chance we could close this thread to guests BEFORE my OH sees it please?
Well if its due in 2009 and we allow for stores to get stocked up with it I expect it to be it should be around 2010, by which time you will probably want to upgrade your current camera anyway - I bet its going to be more like from £4,000 and not $2,500 by the time it gets here though

Just tell your OH that it will take your current lenses so its only the body that will be upgrading :D

If you take a look at some of the red press releases prices vary considerably.

then you consider the cost of all the other components needed to complete a setup comparable to what i have now and your talking serious money. Remember the quoted Price is $2500 - £1200 is just for the Red 'Brain' (basically just like spending 6 grand on the sensor in your current camera.) I have seen an early release of a price list for some of their other gear and for a mid range complete system from them you will be looking at £10,000. Hblad users should be considering it but i don't think i will be parting from the D3 for a while.

My concenrs with the Red system (other than the price ) are how low will the shutter speeds go and nothing has been mentionned about a way of triggering flashes. I think they will remain a predominantly video camera with the ability to take stills, rather than being used as a full blown still camera.

Try carrying 2 of those around.

Might miss the shot while constructing an new setup too.

I'm sure if a company like Red can whip up this kind of technology they almost certainly deal with the requirements needed by the target market.

still nice... all those things that come apart, too bad about the price and size.

Equally, if this is being announced now, then what will the likes of Canon and Nikon etc be able to do, at a far smaller price.

Indeed, but they'll have to jump forward a few generations worth of tech first.
I hope they succeed, Canon & Nikon make camera's and not stuff that looks like Darth Vader's thermos.

would rather keep my D3 thanks ..
My D3 is my firm companion until it disintegrates.

With one of those, i'd end up filling my 200Gb HDD with about 800 shots..

NOT GOOD!

Currently yes, but maybe not when Red releases it's first still shot system.
