Hi.

I bought a bottle of DDX on Boxing Day and used it once or twice. I went to use it a few days after and the lid was stuck on. I've been using D76 since. I have another sachet of it but its unmixed and I have some film I want to develop today.

With the correct combination of plier application and the strength of ten bears I have managed to heroically remove the lid from the DDX. Upon looking inside the bottle it has taken on a rather yellow hue and there are a few floaters which I am guessing are bits from the lid thread.

Do you fine people recommend me using it? Or should I just mix my D76 and wait until tomorrow? It's my day off today though and I struggle to develop any other times due to time constraints.

*edit*

Well it worked :D

Film was FP4+. Camera was Minolta X-500 (with the 50 1.7 on).

Thanks for looking and thanks all for the help earlier

Nick I am no expert so take what I say with a pinch of salt!

I have been experimenting with old developer and old film and have found Ilford chems to be pretty resilient. I'd be inclined to strain out the bits of plastic, mix as normal and possibly add a little developing time for the effects of the air in the bottle. You could clip test a few frames before you commit a whole roll to the mixture. All of that said I am prone to try mad experiments so take that into account:cuckoo:

I opened a bottle of DDX on the 13th October last year and it's fine. I would have thought that you would be ok.

Edit : Storage details from Ilford

ILFOTEC DD-X
24 months in full tightly capped bottles.
6 months in half full tightly capped bottles.

I think we can safely assume this was "tightly capped"! :D

Thanks for the suggestions folks. I think I'm going to just dive right in and dev the roll that's in the camera when I get home from shooting today :)

The only Ilford developer I've used to date is LC29.

By the time I finished my last bottle, the dev was the colour of dandelion and burdock pop and like your DDX, it contained "floaters".

It worked just fine although I have to admit I too was a tad aprehensive about using it.

Tbh, going by the Ilfords stats that David has listed, it would seem that the developer should stay good until at least end of June, given you opened it end of Dec.

My advice to you Nick .....if you can clip test then do so, if it's a very important film then use your D76, if you fancy experimenting and curiosity is getting the better of you then ....Just go for it!

Floaters are always a problem with Ilford chemicals as the stupid cardboard seals disintegrate. Mercifully, the fibres don't seem to manifest on the negs. So far..

Well I'm onto way home now so I can dev it and see! Should have some results this evening if all goes to plan :)

Well I just popped the lid off the tank before rinsing to check and yes, the roll is definitely developed! Will post some up later.

Nothing wrong with them Nick........I reckon you'll be good with that developer for a while yet!

They look pretty good to me Nick!

Cheers guys :) I won't be chucking it out yet then!
