Hi Guys
Looking for help. I have a D90 body and attached to it is a 70-200 2.8 (heavy) I am doing my first wedding soon. I have another camera going with me. Therefore one of the cameras will be shoulder slung.
Am I going to damage anything by slinging the D90 with 70-200 attached over my shoulder for a good part of the day? The strap is attached to the body so the lens is "hanging" off the body. Is this putting any pressure on anything? Assuming of course the strap holds out!!
Any advice appreciated.

I understand you asking that question. I have seen a few comments in various photographic mags which say that a heavy lens like that will place undue strain on the body mounting.
It certainly would if you were to use a tripod and mount the camera body to it, rather than the lens itself. Hanging down from a strap over the shoulder though . . . . not sure, probably not. If you don't feel happy you could always try this ? Thinktank gear is widely available here in UK ( £56.99 amazon )

Enjoy the 70 - 200 f/2.8 by the way, it's a cracking lens which I bought myself recently. As you say, pretty heavy but the results will make you VERY happy.

Colin, thanks for the comments. Had a look at the holster, it's an option for sure. Looking forward to using the 70-200 again. Had an older version a few years ago but sold it to fund an iMac for one of the kids, I have never let them forget it either. Nice to have the newer one this time. Roll on the wedding.
 
My rule of thumb -

If the manufacturer includes the lugs for strap attachment then use them and let the camera dangle from the lens. Otherwise, attach the strap to the camera and let the lens dangle from the camera.
 
70-200mm is not classed as a heavy lens. Different if it was a 200-400mm! Should you be shooting weddings if you have to ask this?
 
I guess that makes sense hollis_f. Just that this will be hanging for a good few hours. Maybe my problem is its a new lens and I am treating with kid gloves.
 
Hi snap-happy, lens feels fairly heavy to me. As for if I should be shooting weddings that is totally my decision. A simple question was asked and I have had some helpful replys. Don't question me please on what I should or should not be taking pics of.

I fail to see what the strength of a D90 lens mount or even knowledge of the lens mount has to do with weddings?

Not a Nikon guy but the canon 70-200 2.8s come with a tripod collar and i always use it to attach my strap if i'm going to have it attatched to my 1D for extended periods of time

Sounds good though I am not sure the Nikon lets you do that.
 
My Sigma has a foot on it which I screw my Black Rapid strap into, I'm sure the Nikkor has one as well, and it is much better balanced than attaching to the body.

Just had a Google on this and it looks just like what I am after, had no idea these existed. Many thanks for the heads up much appreciated. Chris.
 
My Sigma lens came with a strap that threads into the tripod foot (no clasp, buckle, catch etc); it is the only lens I own that has its own foot so I don't know if other feet are designed to do the same.

Another vote for the Black Rapid route. When not in use the camera sits down by your hip and is comfortable to wear and easy to reach. You'll hardly feel the weight with these straps. They also do a two camera version too should you wish to carry two cameras.
 
Already covered so won't say anything other than don't kneel if you've got it on your sling haha ;)
 
And keep checking the screw connector on the base of the lens or camera. They do work loose from time to time.

To be honest that was a concern, don't want to spend all my time checking to see if it's comes loose.

Use a drop of thread locker. Still easily unscrew-able by hand but is great security for such thread attachments

Thanks Ian. I never thought of using thread locker But to anyone who intends to buy some just be sure it's not a permanent type. There's so many different types available.
 
I use Zap Z-42 Thread locker blue - medium strength.

Available at places like Wilkinsons & B&Q if I recall correctly

Seems to do the job ok.
